“I am sad because I did not expect to get an injury but I am also angry as it has come straight after another injury," the 26-year-old told Ole.
Prior to the past 12 months, Messi’s injury record has been almost exemplary, as he featured in over 50 club games per season since 2008-09.
His intensive playing schedule has been mooted as a possible explanation for his current problems, but Messi was quick to deny that this is the case.
“I’m not the only one playing many games a season," he said.
"Many people in the league play as much as I do.”
Messi also insists that he plans to return to action only when he is fully fit in order to avoid further injuries before the World Cup next summer.
“The plan is to resume playing when my body tells me I’m fine," he explained.
"I will make sure I can train properly for Brazil.”
