League Table
CELTA VIGO
2 0 OSASUNA

Two goals in the second half were enough for Celta Vigo as they defeated Osasuna 2-0 in La Liga on Saturday, earning their first victory in the Spanish Primera Division for five seasons.

Osasuna threatened early on when Joseba Llorente headed against the woodwork but Celta showed plenty of guile as the match progressed and marched on to take the lead in twenty minutes from time.

Augusto Fernandez dribbled down the right before sending a pin-point cross into the centre for Iago Aspas, who headed in his first goal of the campaign.

Things got from bad to worse for Osasuna 10 minutes before the end of the match when Javi Arribas was handed his second yellow card of the match for a push on Mario Bermejo. The one-man advantage allowed Celta to score their second of the day in the last minute when Toni sent Bermejo through on goal to slot home and seal the win.

 ZARAGOZA
0 1 MALAGA

A second half header from Nacho Camacho saw Malaga go joint-top of the Spanish Primera Division on Saturday as Manuel Pellegrini’s defeated Real Zaragoza 1-0 at La Romareda.

The visitors were going into the match having learned their group stage opponents for their maiden season in the Champions League, but the celebratory mood was almost cut short early against Zaragoza when Romaric had the whole goal gaping but somehow managed to miss from 12 yards.

Malaga recovered from their early scare and went on to take the lead in the 55th minute when Nacho Camacho darted to the front post and managed to glance home Eliseu’s cross, ensuring an unbeaten start to the new campaign.

DEPORTIVO
1 1 GETAFE

A goal from either side in the first half ensured the honors were even at Riazor on Saturday evening as Deportivo and Getafe played out a 1-1 draw.

The away side went into the match coming off a fantastic home victory against Real Madrid last week, but were brought back down to earth quickly as Riki gave Deportivo the lead after just six minutes when he fired a left-footed shot into the bottom corner from just outside the box.

However, the lead lasted just 20 minutes as Abdel Barrada continued his goalscoring form after slotting into the bottom corner one-on-one with Daniel Aranzubia following a speedy counter attack from the capital club.

MALLORCA
1 0 REAL SOCIEDAD

A 1-0 victory for Mallorca against Real Sociedad ensured the Islanders climbed to the top of the Spanish Primera Division as unlikely leaders on Saturday.

The Basque side stubbornly shut out the hosts for the majority of the match, with goalkeeper Claudio Bravo not being called into action on too many occasions.

However, Mallorca were relentless in their pursuit of a goal, and took the lead 15 minutes from time when Victor Casadesus made a run along the six-yard-box to head home into the bottom corner from Javi Marquez’s cross, extending their unbeaten start to the new season.

RAYO
0 0 SEVILLA

The scoreline at Campo de Futbol de Vallecas did not do the game justice as there was plenty of drama when Rayo and Sevilla played out a 0-0 draw on Sunday morning.

The away side should have took the lead after just seven minutes when Alvaro Negredo was brought down inside the area by Jordi Amat, but the subsequent penalty was missed when the Sevilla man struck the post.

The hosts hung on but lightning struck twice when Sevilla were awarded another penalty after Ruben Martinez was sent off for bringing down Ivan Rakitic as the last man inside the box. Unfortunately for Michel Gonzalez’s men, the Croatian dragged his penalty wide, and Rayo remained solid to earn a point.

ATHLETIC BILBAO
2 0 VALLADOLID

Athletic Bilbao earned their first points of the new La Liga season when they defeated Valladolid 2-0 in a comfortable victory at San Mames.

The Basques had lost their opening two games of the new campaign so the pressure was building on Marcelo Bielsa and his squad, but it was eased after a shaky start in the 69th minute when Aritz Aduriz latched on to a loose ball through the centre and slotted the ball into the bottom right corner.

Athletic’s first win of the season was sealed six minutes later when Markel Susaeta picked up the ball inside the box and curled the ball with precision into the top right corner.

LEVANTE
3 2 ESPANYOL

Levante came back from two goals down to record their first La Liga win of the season in a 3-2 thriller against Espanyol at Ciudad de Valencia on Sunday.

It was Mauricio Pochettino’s men who took the lead in the 21st minute when on-loan Inter Milan striker Samuele Longo spectacularly volleyed into the top corner from inside the area. It was another Summer recruit who doubled the tally four minutes later when Sergio Tejera curled the ball into the bottom corner from 25 yards.

However, the hosts rallied after the break and were back on level terms just 11 minutes after half-time.  Juanlu continued the trend of spectacular goals in the match when he fired a shot into the top corner from 25 yards. Christian Lell put Espanyol back on level terms in the 56th minute when he slotted into the top left corner from the centre of the area.

It looked as if the points were going to be shared, but Espanyol’s hearts were broken in the very last minute of the game when Michel’s cross deflected off Raul Rodriguez and agonizingly went past the wrong-footed Cristian Alvarez.
