Puyol set to resume squad training despite fractured cheekbone

The Barcelona centre-back was expected to face a spell on the sidelines due to the facial injury, but could yet make an appearance against Real Madrid on Wednesday
Barcelona defender Carles Puyol could be match fit in time for Wednesday's Spanish Supercopa second leg away against Real Madrid despite having sustained a fractured cheekbone.

The Spain international picked up the facial injury in the Catalans' 2-1 La Liga win over Osasuna, and he was initially expected to be out of action for a while.

Nevertheless, Barca have revealed that the centre-back will resume regular training action on Tuesday, and they are hopeful that Puyol will be available on Wednesday.

"Medical tests confirm that Carles Puyol has fractured his right cheekbone, according to the report released by the team’s medical services this morning," a statement on the official Barcelona website reads.

"The captain will maintain a conservative recovery plan, but he will join his team-mates for Tuesday’s training session. His recovery will mark his availability for the return leg of the Spanish Supercup against Madrid on Wednesday."

Meanwhile, Real Madrid have also received some encouraging news from the treatment table as well as Pepe is set to resume regular training.

The Portugal international sustained a concussion in Madrid's 1-1 La Liga draw against Valencia on matchday 1 and consequently missed the first leg versus Barca and the league loss against Getafe.

Nevertheless, los Blancos are hopeful that the powerful centre-back will be match fit in time for Wednesday's encounter.

Barcelona defend a 3-2 lead from the first leg in the return at the Santiago Bernabeu.
