The ex-right-hand man to Joan Laporta has admitted that the Catalan club had initially set their sights on the Portuguese trainer, but eventually opted for Pep

Former Barcelona vice-president Ferran Soriano has revealed that the club initially preferred Jose Mourinho over Pep Guardiola when they were looking for a new coach in the summer of 2008.

The Blaugrana had initially targeted the current Real Madrid boss as the replacement for Frank Rijkaard, but they eventually opted for Guardiola instead as they felt Mourinho's football philosophy was not suitable for Barcelona.

"I can confirm that we initially preferred Mourinho over Pep," Soriano was quoted as saying in an interview with Eurosport.

"Mourinho is a great coach who has enjoyed plenty of success. He had worked for Barcelona before, so he knew how we play.

"However, you just have to look at the way Inter and Real Madrid play to see that he has a different philosophy. That's why eventually we decided not to hire him."

Barcelona won two Champions League trophies as well as three La liga titles and many more silverware in the past four seasons under Guardiola.
