'Anything can happen with 63 points to play for' - Javier Mascherano adamant Barcelona can catch Real Madrid in La Liga title race

The Argentine admits that the Catalans are not in an ideal position, having fallen five points behind their rivals, but he believes that there is still all to play for

Barcelona's Javier Mascherano is adamant that the club can overhaul Real Madrid at the top of La Liga.

The Catalans currently trail their great rivals by five points, and that has prompted many pundits to claim that Los Blancos’ lead is an unassailable one.

However, Mascherano is adamant that the strength of the league should not be underestimated and he is expecting both sides to drop many more points before the season’s end.

“I mean five points is a difference that we don’t like to see,” the Argentine admitted. “But at the same time there are still some 63 points to play for.

“Anything can happen in that time and you also have to value the rivals ahead of you. We have to respect them, like they do us.

“And it’s the same with Madrid and their rivals. Their opponents are capable of robbing points from them, just like ours are from us.”

Madrid travel to Mallorca on Saturday evening, while Barcelona host Real Betis at Camp Nou the following night.
