Barcelona forward David Villa has expressed his desire to start his recovery process as soon as possible and is confident that he will return to the pitch shortly.

The Spain international sustained a fractured tibia in his side's 4-0 Club World Cup semi-final win over Al Sadd last week and successfully underwent surgery on Monday.

His rehabilitation period is expected to last four to five months but the 30-year-old is optimistic of making a quick comeback.

"With a lot of work and with people's help, you’ll see me on the football field soon, enjoying myself like I did before," Villa was quoted as saying on the club's official website.

"My head has been recovering ever since the surgery. I’ll start to rehabilitate this leg soon. I’m really looking forward to getting well so I can return and fight on the pitch."

Dr. Ramon Cugat, who oversaw Villa's operation, revealed on Monday evening that the medical team is hopeful the striker will be match fit in time for Euro 2012.

Starting last month and continuing every Friday through to January, Goal.com will publish extracts from Graham Hunter's highly-anticipated book, 'Barca: The Making of the Greatest Team in the World'. After Sunday's Club World Club final win over Santos, the latest extract details how Lionel Messi helped the Catalans claim this trophy for the very first time in their history in 2009.
