Valencia coach Unai Emery expressed his happiness at seeing his side put up a fight to earn a well-deserved 1-0 victory over Sporting Gijon in the Primera Division on Saturday.

The Mestalla club needed a poacher's goal from striker Roberto Soldado to secure the win but the Spanish tactician preferred to focus on the collective effort of his team rather than single out the former Getafe hitman's contribution.

"The game showed the personality of the team and it was a group performance," said Emery after the match.

"This was a difficult game against a side which is battling to pick up points so we can congratulate ourselves for the way we played and worked hard."

Valencia move to the top of the standings in La Liga after their win but await Real Madrid's result against Levante on Sunday.
