Fernando Gago appears to be one step closer to the Real Madrid exit door after his agent, Marcelo Lombilla, opened talks with Roma about a possible summer transfer, Sky Sport Italia reports.
A recent report had already suggested that the Serie A side were interested in signing Gago and they now seem to be ready to make their move before the summer transfer window slams shut on Wednesday.
Roma have yet to formally approach Madrid, but they have held preliminary talks with Lombilla to pave the way for a last-ditch bid.
The 25-year-old Gago has a contract with Madrid until the summer of 2013, but the Santiago Bernabeu side are ready to cash in on the holding midfielder if a good offer comes in.
Gago joined Real Madrid from Boca Juniors in January 2007, but has been struggling to secure regular first-team action in the past two seasons.
Roma have already signed striker Pablo Daniel Osvaldo and fellow forward Bojan Krkic from La Liga this summer, with the two players arriving from Espanyol and Barcelona, respectively.
