Coach of the Catalan giants is not celebrating despite the fact that they need just a point after tonight’s derby win against Espanyol to win La Liga

Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola has kept his feet on the ground and says that they will start celebrating their third Primera Division title triumph in a row only after they have officially won it.

The Catalan giants defeated their city-rivals Espanyol 2-0 at Camp Nou on Sunday evening to edge closer to championship success.

Barcelona now need just a point from their remaining three matches in the campaign and with an eight-point advantage over second-placed Real Madrid, the consensus is that they have practically sew up the title.

However, Guardiola is not thinking about celebrating it and is quoted by Spanish sports daily Marca as saying: “For the first time, the league title is very close. It now depends on us and we must get the result against Levante [in our next match]. “

“If we had not won today, then it would have opened the league and stretched it until the last match, which was what we wanted to avoid,” added Guardiola, referring to Madrid’s comprehensive 6-2 defeat of Sevilla on Saturday.

Guardiola also reminded the fans that despite Barca being in the hunt for the double as they are also in the final of the Champions League, they have not won any silverware yet this campaign.

“What I want is to win the league as soon as possible,” said the 40-year-old. “We have not won anything but we are close. The only team who have won a trophy are Real Madrid.”

Madrid defeated Barca 1-0 in the final of the Copa del Rey last month to win their first piece of silverware in three years. Cristiano Ronaldo scored the winner in extra-time at the Mestalla with a headed goal.
