Real Madrid are understood to be ready to step up their attempts to sign star German international midfielder Mesut Oezil from Werder Bremen.

Coach Jose Mourinho has already confirmed los Merengues' pursuit of Ozil's international team-mate Sami Khedira, and declared they were interested in signing another midfielder and one defender.

Mourinho has stressed the transfer policy at the Santiago Bernabeu this summer would revolve around buying players with potential and Ozil, at just 21-years-old, would certainly fit into that category after his excellent exploits at World Cup 2010.

According to AS, initial contact has already been made with Ozil's representatives, Eurofin Sport, who informed Jorge Valdano & Co that the buyout clause in the midfielder's contract was set at €16 million (£13.5m).

Ozil is understood to be stalling on a two year contract extension with the Bundesliga side, and although Madrid are hoping for a drop in the transfer fee, it is likely they will have to meet the figure stipulated in his contract with a number of other European clubs believed to be on his trail.

It appears Ozil and Khedira have emerged as Madrid's priorities this summer, as it is also reported that the chances of another German star, Bastian Schweinsteiger, signing from Bayern Munich are far less likely.

The midfielder, who turns 26 later this month, still has two years remaining on his current deal while his buyout clause is believed to be set at 55m (£46m), which represents more than double the outlay for both of his younger international team-mates.
