Barcelona director general Joan Oliver has denied reports Arsenal have asked the Catalans to double their rejected £29 million bid for Cesc Fabregas.

Fabregas, 23, has been at the heart of a transfer battle between the clubs after he informed Arsene Wenger of his desire to move to his boyhood club. The Catalans had an official offer rejected last week, but rumour had emerged that a price of £58m had been set to complete the deal.

Speaking to the Spanish press, Oliver dismissed the story.

"They said they would not sell, it's logical therefore that they have not set a price for him," Oliver said.

"We made a formal offer. The only official response we have from Arsenal is that they are not ready to sell the player, for which it would be difficult for them to be putting a price when they say they are not selling."

He added: "On our part, after having made an offer we are ready to sign the deal this very morning.

"We still have time to do it, but it is a deal we cannot do just by ourselves."
