The 44-year-old's shock departure was confirmed on Tuesday evening after he handed in his resignation, despite signing a one-year extension in May after guiding the club to a third consecutive Serie A title.
And Buffon admits the loss of a "great coach" is a huge one for the club, but insists they will not fall apart without him.
"It's a great loss, a bolt from the blue," he said moments after the news was made official. "But we are not at year zero - his work will not disappear over two months.
"We are losing a great coach, but we have terrific players and are a forward-thinking club. We are competent and solid. We must now have greater compactness and prove our worth, regardless of Conte.
"I do not know why he left, but it was not because of transfers. Maybe there was something that had been brewing inside for some time.
"When you come to these decisions, it is perhaps because there is no more willingness to continue working together."
