Catania have sacked Rolando Maran for the second time this season following Sunday's 2-1 defeat to Torino.
Maran will be replaced by Maurizio Pellegrino, who has previously managed the club in Serie C1 and has been involved with the youth academy this season.
The dismissal comes after a fifth consecutive league defeat, and a seventh in the last eight games which leaves Catania stranded at the bottom of the league, seven points from safety with six games season remaining this season.
Maran was previously sacked earlier in the season when the first eight games yielded only five points and one win, being replaced by Luigi De Canio.
However, the club's form did not pick up and Maran was rehired on January 15 in a bid to turn around Catania's fortunes.
But the 50-year-old has managed just one Serie A win in 13 games since then, leaving the club with an uphill task to maintain their top-flight status.
It is a sad end for Maran, who enjoyed a superb first season with Catania, which saw them finish eighth in the league with a record 56 points, missing out on a Europa League spot by just five points.
