The Germany international has lauded the ability of his Fiorentina team-mate following the Italian's return to form after recovering from a long term knee injury

Fiorentina's Mario Gomez has hailed team-mate Giuseppe Rossi as one of the best strikers in the world.

After missing most of the last two years through injury, the Italy international has made a flying start to the season, notching six goals in all competitions during the first nine games of his first full campaign at Stadio Artemio Franchi.

And Gomez revealed his excitement at renewing his understanding with Rossi, who he felt was ready to stake his claim as one of the game’s elite players after putting his injury woes behind him.

“I get on very well with Rossi and he is an extraordinary player,” the 28-year-old said to the club’s official channel. “He was just unlucky with injuries, but he’s one of the greatest strikers in the world.

Gomez also revealed that he was closer to making a comeback for Fiorentina, having been out since September after injuring his knee during a 1-1 draw against Cagliari.

“I am recovering very well and think by the end of the week I’ll be able to train on the field, even if I can’t train with the ball yet,” he added.

“When I picked up the injury we said it would be seven or eight weeks. Now I’ve been out for four and feel good, even if it’s tough being in the stands. I am more anxious than when I step onto the pitch!

“I hope to be back playing soon, even though I have to listen to what my knee is telling me."

The Germany forward, who signed from Bayern Munich in July, has acclimatised quickly to his new surroundings, and revealed that his decision to join Fiorentina was based on his admiration of their style of play.

“The training ground and the city are beautiful, but the team and the way they play football are what really drew me to Fiorentina,” he explained. “I like the way they pass the ball and attack. I watched many of their games last season.

“It has been easy to settle in with such a great group of players. We really get along and the fans are also wonderful, as you can feel their passion for the team.”
