The Brazilian defender, who joined from Inter last summer, has opted to return to Serie A after an unspectacular season in England where he only managed 11 appearances

Manchester City have confirmed that Brazilian full-back Maicon has moved to Roma.

The 31-year-old only moved to the Etihad Stadium last summer in a £3 million deal from Inter but has now returned to Italy, this time to Rome, after being deemed surplus to requirements by new City boss Manuel Pellegrini.

Maicon struggled with injuries and only managed 11 appearances under Roberto Mancini last season with Pablo Zabaleta the preferred first-choice right-back.

The Brazil international joins Roma in a transitional period with Rudi Garcia taking charge at the Stadio Olimpico and hopes to rediscover the form that led him to become one of the world's leading full-back's during his time at Inter.

The Serie A side revealed the news of Maicon's arrival on Tuesday as they tweeted a picture of the Brazilian at the club's training ground, alongside the message: "Welcome aboard, Maicon!"
