The 34-year-old recently announced his decision not to extend his expiring deal with Milan, and has since been linked with clubs such as Rangers and Boca Juniors.
However, Lazio now appear to be sitting in pole position to secure the services of Gattuso as they are determined to add some more experience to their squad ahead of the 2012-13 campaign.
The Rome club had to settle for fourth spot in Serie A this term, thus missing out on Champions League qualification, and they are hopeful of making it into European club football's elite tournament next year with Gattuso in their ranks.
The Biancocelesti have yet to make the midfielder an official offer, but they are claimed to be preparing to offer the midfielder a contract until 2014 in the upcoming weeks.
