January transfer window mid-term report: Who is coming & who is going in Serie A
Goal.com recaps who's done what so far and tries to predict what deals could yet go through before the end of the month, with Inter still dreaming of Carlos Tevez

ANALYSIS
By Renato Maisani
Two-thirds of the winter window has already slipped away and, although there has been a lot of talk and many twists and turns, only a few proposed deals have actually materialised.
The transfer of Alberto Gilardino from Fiorentina to Genoa, the arrival of Eduardo Vargas in Naples and Marco Borriello's move north to Juventus have been the most noteworthy transactions so far.
The top clubs, unlike in previous years, have done little and yet moved decisively, while the smaller sides are struggling to make anything happen, with the obvious exception of Novara, who have already signed four players, and Enrico Preziosi's Genoa, who have, as ever, been very active in the market.
Overall, though, with only 10 days remaining before the window shuts, there are still many players who are waiting to learn their fate: from Amauri to Maxi Lopez, from Pozzi to Candreva, from Kozak to Cerci, from Santana to Tevez - on whom Inter are refusing to give up.
Then there are the clubs that need to fill gaping holes in their squads: Catania are searching for a goalkeeper and a defender; Roma require a midfielder, as do Juventus and Lazio; Siena are seeking another forward, just as Lecce are.
In short, we will see a lot more moves before the end of the month. For now, however, we analyse the current state of play at every club in Serie A three weeks into this crazy transfer market ...

The purchase of Guglielmo Stendardo seems to have shored up the defence, the only department in which the Orobici look to be in need of reinforcements. Now, with Matteo Ardemagni and Leonardo Pettinari having been offloaded, Atalanta have no real need to trim their squad any further, with Manolo Gabbiadini the only player who could conceivably be set for a change of scenery.
In terms of arrivals, the arrival of Stendardo should end their interest in Felipe but they remain in the hunt for Zlatko Junuzovic, Austria Vienna's Serbian-born midfielder.
Arrivals: Guglielmo Stendardo (Lazio, loan)
Departures: Matteo Ardemagni (Modena, loan), Leonardo Pettinari (Varese, loan)
Targets: Felipe, Zlatko Junuzovic
Possible transfers: Manolo Gabbiadini

Now well-stocked at the back with the acquisition of Frederik Sorensen and Matteo Rubin, versatile players who can be used in both defence and midfield, Bologna appear to have completed their business, in terms of new arrivals at least. All the same, the Rossoblu are still monitoring Luc Castaignos' situation at Inter with great interest in the hope of maybe prising the the young forward away from San Siro on loan.
Daniele Vantaggiato appears to heading towards the exit as there is no space for him in the current set-up. Daniele Paponi will also leave if another striker arrives. Napoli, meanwhile, are asking after Gaby Mudingayi.
Arrivals: Matteo Rubin (Torino, loan), Frederik Sorensen (Juventus, loan)
Departures: -
Targets: Andrea Mantovani, Luc Castaignos, Libor Kozak, Gonzalo Bueno
Possible transfers: Daniele Vantaggiato, Daniele Paponi, Gaby Mudingayi

The arrival of Daniele Dessena from Sampdoria has compensated for the departure of Davide Biondini to Genoa. Nicola Pozzi, meanwhile, could also arrive in Sardinia from Liguria - the forward is Cagliari's primary transfer target.
President Massimo Cellino is also following the Paraguayan striker Pablo Zeballos and the Argentine Sebastian Battaglia. In Italy, however, they have their eyes on Reggina's Giuseppe Rizzo and Juve Stabia's Riccardo Cazzola, though Cesena and Catania also have him in their crosshairs. Nobody is expected to leave the island, with the possible exception of Radja Nainggolan, even if it is more likely that the Belgian midfielder will move abroad at the end of the season.
Arrivals: Daniele Dessena (Sampdoria, loan)
Departures: Davide Biondini (Genoa, permanent), Daniele Magliocchetti (Reggiana, permanent), Paolo Dametto (Prato, loan)
Targets: Riccardo Cazzola, Sebastian Battaglia, Nicola Pozzi, Marco Parolo, Pablo Zeballos, Giuseppe Rizzo
Possible transfers: Radja Nainggolan

Chief executive Pietro Lo Monaco has been very clear about Catania's January strategy: to reduce the squad by at least five players and then shore it up with some ad hoc acquisitions.
The first part of the project seems to be almost complete: Keko and Fabio Sciacca were sent to Serie B outfit Grosseto; Mariano Andujar and Pablo Ledesma - who were out of favour with the club - are returning to Argentina; while Davide Lanzafame and Adrian Ricchiuti are currently being courted by Padova and Gubbio, respectively.
The situation with Maxi Lopez is more complicated. The striker is wanted by a number of different teams - Fulham are at the head of the queue - but will probably have to wait until the end of the month for his future to be sorted out.
In terms of arrivals, Catania are definitely looking to sign a goalkeeper and Vicenza's Alberto Frison is the most likely canidate to fill that role. Their prospects of landing Ilsinho, announced as an imminent signing by the Rossazzurra, appear to be receding, but their hopes of picking up Jo remain alive. Finally, a Brazilian defender will apparently arrive in Sicily but there have been so many names circulating that it is clear that nobody actually knows who it will be.
Arrivals: -
Departures: Keko (Grosseto, loan), Fabio Sciacca (Grosseto, loan), Mariano Andujar (Estudiantes, loan)
Targets: Ilsinho, Alberto Frison, Jo
Possible transfers: Davide Lanzafame, Pablo Ledesma, Maxi Lopez, Adrian Ricchiuti

Now that Adrian Mutu and Eder have awoken from their slumbers, the Romagna club's interest in signing another striker has cooled somewhat. But even if the Brazilian forward had to be sold to Sampdoria, the Bianconeri are not really in a position to strengthen offensively, although they have been monitoring Wolfsburg's attempts to secure Vikoria Plzen's Vaclav Pilar on loan and are also closely following Inter's Castaignos.
Defensively, they have been buoyed by the arrival of former Bologna man Vangelis Moras and Czech ace Daniel Pudil. Marco Parolo is courted by half of Serie A and Antonio Candreva is set for Napoli (there is still a chance of a swap deal involving Santana). Cesena have also cast their spotlight on Juve Stabia's Cazzola.
Arrivals: Vangelis Moras (Swansea, permanent), Daniel Pudil (Granada, loan)
Departures: -
Targets: Vaclav Pilar, Luc Castaignos, Mario Alberto Santana, Riccardo Cazzola
Possible transfers: Marco Parolo, Antonio Candreva, Eder

Chievo Verona are one of the few teams that have little work to do during the transfer window. The squad is well balanced and, though not particularly big, is in good nick.
However, Palermo are pushing for Luca Rigoni and could be open to a swap deal involving the Slovenian Armir Bacinovic. In addition, Chievo are following Pescara full-back Antonio Balzano but his current employers, who are currently chasing promotion to Serie A, are unlikely to be willing to deal in January.
Arrivals: -
Departures: -
Targets: Armir Bacinovic, Antonio Balzano, Robert Beric
Possible transfers: Luca Rigoni

Having allowed the only classic out-and-out centre forwards on their books, namely Gilardino and Santiago Silva, to leave, Fiorentina are obviously going to try to use Stevan Jovetic more in a central striking role, but it is more than probable that another hitman will be signed during the window.
Juventus misfit Amauri certainly seems the most likely arrival, but the Viola have still not given up on Maxi Lopez. In terms of the the middle of the park, Fiorentina like Angelo Palombo and Lucas Biglia, but Parolo is also a possibility. What is clear is that someone will definitely be brought in, with Riccardo Montolivo set to depart in June.
Speaking of the summer, the Egyptian defender Ahmed Hegazy has been signed for next season. Alessio Cerci is close to joining Genoa and youngster Michele Camporese is likely to move elsewhere in search of experience and game time.
Arrivals: -
Departures: Alberto Gilardino (Genoa, permanent), Santiago Silva (Boca Juniors, permanent)
Targets: Angelo Palombo, Amauri, Lucas Biglia, Marco Parolo, Maxi Lopez, Armin Bacinovic
Possible transfers: Alessio Cerci, Felipe, Michele Camporese, Marco Marchionni

As ever, Genoa are one of the sides currently attempting to overhaul their playing staff. Strengthened in attack by the arrival of a goalscorer of the pedigree of Gilardino, the Rossoblu have no intention of stopping there and, having brought Giuseppe Sculli back from Lazio, they now want Cerci from Fiorentina.
The departures include Andrea Caracciolo - destination Novara - and Sebastian Ribas, who has been loaned to Sporting CP. In addition, midfielder Alexander Merkel has been loaned back to Millan and replaced with Davide Biondini. Also exiting will be Juraj Kucka and Kevin Constant, while Ze Eduardo and Lucas Pratto appear intent on leaving in search of more regular first-team football. Nicolas Viola will arrive from Reggina, either in January or June at the latest.
Arrivals: Alberto Gilardino (Fiorentina, permanent), Davide Biondini (Cagliari, permanent), Giuseppe Sculli (Lazio, permanent)
Departures: Andrea Caracciolo (Novara, loan), Sebastian Ribas (Sporting CP, loan), Alexander Merkel (AC Milan, loan)
Targets: Alessio Cerci, Nicolas Viola
Possible transfers: Juraj Kucka, Kevin Constant, Ze Eduardo, Lucas Pratto

Jonathan has made the short trip to Parma, while Sulley Muntari and Joel Obi remain on the transfer list. There is no lack of interest for the pair, but it is possible that one of the two could end up staying at Pinetina. As for the on-loan Mauro Zarate, Lazio, who own the forward, want the Argentine playing more but this is proving difficult at Inter. If an offer arrives, the Biancocelesti will try to persuade president Massimo Moratti to allow the player to leave because he is not exactly considered indispensable by coach Claudio Ranieri.
Inter will continue their pursuit of Carlos Tevez, especially if Zarate does leave, but, in the meantime, the club is working on signing young Argentine striker Paulo Dybala. In Brazil, meanwhile, sporting director Marco Branca will try to tie up a deal for the defender Juan, who will probably then be sent out on loan to Novara.
Lucas Moura is another major target of the Nerazzurri's and he could arrive if the Tevez deal collapses. Finally, it has yet to be decied if Kucka will arrive right away or at the end of the season.
Arrivals: -
Departure: Luca Caldirola (Brescia, loan), Emiliano Viviano (Palermo, co-ownership), Jonathan (Parma, loan)
Targets: Carlitos Tevez, Lucas Moura, Juan Jesus, Juraj Kucka, Paulo Dybala
Possible transfers: Sulley Muntari, Joel Obi, Mauro Zarate, Luc Castaignos

Sell, sell, sell - that's the Bianconeri's mantra for the final 10 days of the transfer window. Juve, after loaning Sorensen to Bologna, must still find a new home for Marco Motta, Fabio Grosso and, above all, their collection of misfiring centre-forwards: Vincenzo Iaquinta, Luca Toni and Amauri. All three are on the market but moving them on is not proving straightforward because of their high salaries.
Milos Krasic is in a different situation. Juventus want to cash in on the Serb and are awaiting an attractive offer. On the arrivals front, Borriello has already been signed from Roma on loan and the club are now looking for a defender and a midfielder. Martin Caceres, the Sevilla defender who enjoyed a previous loan spell in Turin, is the number-one candidate to fill the void at the back, while Porto's Fredy Guarin looks set to add some depth in the middle of the park given that signing David Pizarro from Roma is proving difficult.
Arrivals: Marco Borriello (Roma, loan), Taider (Bologna, co-ownership)
Departures: Frederik Sorensen (Bologna, loan), Taider (Bologna, loan)
Targets: David Pizarro, Fredy Guarin, Martin Caceres
Possible transfers: Marco Motta, Fabio Grosso, Milos Krasic, Michele Pazienza, Vincenzo Iaquinta, Luca Toni, Amauri

Uruguayan striker Emiliano Alfaro, just signed from Liverpool de Montevideo, could be immediately loaned out to another club in Serie A, but the departure of Sculli leads one to imagine that the South American will remain at the Stadio Olimpico, unless president Claudio Lotito does not buy another offensive player, such as the mooted Ivica Olic or Andrey Arshavin.
Elsewhere, Libor Kozak and Djibril Cisse could leave the Italian capital; the former is the subject of strong interest from both Cesena and Lecce. In short, Lazio's attack - excluding Tommaso Rocchi and Miroslav Klose - is in a state of flux. In the midfield, Lazio like Zdravko Kuzmanovic and Parolo, so one reinforcement could be brought in before the month's end.
Arrivals: Emiliano Alfaro (Liverpool de Montevideo, permanent)
Departures: Giuseppe Sculli (Genoa, permanent), Guglielmo Stendardo (Atalanta, loan)
Targets: Zdravko Kuzmanovic, Alan Dzagoev, Keisuke Honda, Ivica Olic, Marco Parolo, Andrey Arshavin
Possible transfers Libor Kozak, Stephen Makinwa, Djibril Cisse

The injury suffered by Daniele Corvia makes it all the more necessary for Lecce to sign a new striker and their principal target is Kozak. However, Cesena's Albanian forward, Erjon Bodgani, could also arrive in Salento.
At the back, Djamel Mesbah has left, so Lecce are still keen on Juve's Grosso, while Fabiano Santacroce could arrive from Parma along with his midfield colleague Manuele Blasi. Lecce are also interested in goalkeeper Gianluca Curci, who is surplus to requirements at Roma, and a swap deal with Julio Sergio is a possibility.
Arrivals: -
Departures: Djamel Mesbah (Milan, permanent), Rodney Strasser (Milan, end of loan)
Targets: Gianluca Curci, Fabio Grosso, Libor Kozak, Fabiano Santacroce, Erjon Bogdani, Manuele Blasi, Erjon Bogdani
Possible transfers: Cristian Pasquato, Carlos Grossmuller, Julio Sergio

Milan have treated their supporters to at least one big signing during most recent transfer windows. On this occasion, however, the Rossoneri fans will have to settle for just Mesbah, the Algerian left-back who will serve as a replacement for the outgoing Taye Taiwo, who is bound for either a return to France or a switch to England.
As well as Mesbah, Rodney Strasser is also arriving from Lecce after the completion of his loan deal with the southern side, but the African's season has already been ended by injury. In midfield, Milan are still searching for 'the new Gattuso', but have brought Merkel back from Genoa and are still waiting to see if anything develops on the Seydou Keita front.
Up front, El Shaarawy and Pato are staying but Filippo Inzaghi could end up having to pack his bags. The chances of Tevez arriving are now very small - thus, Milan could ressurect their deal for Maxi Lopez.
Arrivals: Djamel Mebsah (Lecce, permanent), Rodney Strasser (Lecce, end of loan), Alexander Merkel (Genoa, co-ownership)
Departures: -
Targets: Carlitos Tevez, Seydou Keita, Maxi Lopez
Possible transfers: Filippo Inzaghi, Taye Taiwo

Aurelio De Laurentiis has already pulled off January's major transfer coup by signing Universidad de Chila's Vargas, of whom much is expected. To help balance the books and clear some space in the squad, Giuseppe Mascara has been offloaded to Novara.
As a result, the focus has now fallen on the midfield: Candreva could arrive from Cesena in a possible swap deal for Santana, while Marco Donadel is on his way out of the door and Napoli want to offer him to Palermo (together with Salvatore Aronica, whose contract is expiring) in exchange for Giulio Migliaccio.
Napoli are also tracking Omar El Kaddouri of Brescia as well as, finally, Mehdi Benatia: Udinese do not seem willing to lose him before June but Napoli are trying to put the foundations of a deal in place to secure the Moroccan's services before then.
Arrivals: Eduardo Vargas (Universidad de Chile, permanent)
Departures: Giuseppe Mascara (Novara, permanent), Leandro Rinaudo (Novara, loan)
Targets: Gaby Mudingayi, Antonio Candreva, Omar El Kaddouri, Mehdi Benatia, Giulio Migliaccio
Possible transfers: Mario Alberto Santana, Marco Donadel, Ignacio Fideleff, Salvatore Aronica

The arrival of Caracciolo and Mascara has strengthened a department that, with the return of Takauki Morimoto, is now equipped to help the club preserve their top-flight status, in spite of the departure of Riccardo Meggiorini. In defence, Carlos Labrin has been replaced with Leandro Rinaudo, while Luigi Giorgi, who has been used very little in midfield, has made way for Daniel Jensen.
It will be difficult for the basement club to do anything else, though it remains possible that they could try to secure Juan on loan if the Brazilian completes his proposed move to Inter. Jeda could leave and Motta may yet be recruited but, in truth, little else is expected to happen at Novara.
Arrivals: Andrea Caracciolo (Genoa, loan), Giuseppe Mascara (Napoli, permanent), Leandro Rinaudo (Napoli, loan), Daniel Jensen (free)
Departures: Riccardo Meggiorini (Torino, co-ownership), Carlos Labrin (Palermo, permanent), Luigi Giorgi (Siena, loan)
Targets: Marco Motta, Juan Jesus
Possible transfers: Jeda

Massimo Donati has been signed to bolster the midfield and Emiliano Viviano will take up residence between the posts, so Palermo have already filled the most obvious gaps in their squad. The return of Mauricio Pinilla and Abel Hernandez should solve their problems in attack and the arrival of Argentine Franco Vazquez will provide added quality in midfield.
However, Maurizio Zamparini is still looking for reinforcements, esepcially in the middle of the park. Luca Rigoni and the Uruguayan Egidio Arevalo Rios are the principal targets, with Palermo having given up on signing Palombo. Elsewhere, Armin Bacinovic will surely be on his way, with Fiorentina and Chievo both waiting in the wings.
Arrivals: Agon Mehmeti (Malmo, permanent), Franco Vazquez (Belgrano, permanent), Massimo Donati (Bari, permanent), Carlos Labrin (Novara, permanent), Emiliano Viviano (Genoa, co-owndership), Milan Milanovic (Siena, permanent)
Departures: Rubinho (released)
Targets: Egidio Arevalo Rios, Luca Rigoni, Edison Flores
Possible transfers: Armin Bacinovic

The purchase of Jonathan should allow Donadoni to use Cristian Zaccardo on the right-hand side of the defence as he seeks to implement a switch to 3-5-2. Parma also need a central defender (they are looking at Daniele Gastaldello, Stefano Ferrario and Yohan Benalouane) and a quality midfielder - Ruben Olivera is their preferred candidate in that capacity.
In the departure lounge, Graziano Pelle is certain to go, but Hernan Crespo could also leave if he chooses to accept the petrodollars on offer in India. Blasi and Santacroce are also on the market.
Arrivals: Jonathan (Inter, loan), Lofquist (Mjallby, permanent)
Departures: Rubin (Bologna, permanent), Nwankwo (Gubbio, loan)
Targets: Daniele Gastaldello, Ruben Olivera, Yohan Benalouane, Stefano Ferrario
Possible transfers: Graziano Pelle, Hernan Crespo, Fabian Santacroce, Brandao, Manuele Blasi

The departure of Borriello has created a space in Roma's offensive line that will not be filled by Nicolas Lopez, the young Uruguayan striker who is not yet considered ready for the first team. Maxi Lopez is an option but sealing that deal will not be at all easy.
Reinforcements could arrive in defence, but no names are circulating other than that of Tottenham's Vedran Corluka. Meanwhile, director of football Walter Sabatini has focused on the midfield: the Brazilian Marquinho is all but secured, while the Serbian Nemanja Tomic is also of interest. Gianluca Caprari should be shipped out to Pescara but, while Pizarro could yet leave, there has still been no confirmation on that front.
Arrivals: Nicolas Lopez (Nacional, permanent)
Departures: Marco Borriello (Juventus, loan)
Targets: Casemiro, Nemanja Tomic, Marquinho, Vedran Corluka, Maxi Lopez
Possible transfers: Gianluca Caprari, David Pizarro

Giorgi, the midfielder who has arrived from Novara, is the only new face at Siena so far, with the club seemingly determined to avoid changing very much during the window. What they are doing, though, is trying to find a striker who could serve as an understudy for Emanuele Calaio and Mattia Destro, with the main candidates for that supporting role Lazio's Alfaro and Reggina's Daniele Cacia.
On the way out is Marcelo Larrondo, who is of interest to Brescia. On the way in is Alessandro Carrozza, but the deal has yet to be completed, with Siena struggling to agree terms with Varese. They are still working on it, though ...
Arrivals: Luigi Giorgi (Novara, loan)
Departures: Milan Milanovic (Palermo, permanent)
Targets: Alessandro Carrozza, Alfaro, Daniele Cacia, Jaime Valdes
Possible transfers: Marcelo Larrondo

It seems that little or nothing will happen at Udinese, with president Giampaolo Pozzo already having snapped up Gelson Fernandes, who enjoyed a previous spell in Serie A with Chievo. Youngster Thierry Doubai has been sent out on loan to Sochaux, who could yet send midfielder Kevin Anin in the opposite direction.
It would appear that Diego Fabbrini is going to stay, despite seeming bound for Torino in recent days, while there has also been talk of a move for CSKA Sofia forward Junior Moraes. It would be difficult, but not impossible, to sign Michele Pazienza from Juventus.
Arrivals: Jean Alain Fanchone (released), Gelson Fernandes (Saint Etienne, loan), Carrasco (Audax Italiano, loan)
Departures: Thierry Doubai (Sochaux, loan)
Targets: Kevin Anin, Michele Pazienza, Junior Moraes
Possible transfers: Paulo Vitor Barreto, Diego Fabbrini

Departures: Frederik Sorensen (Bologna, loan), Taider (Bologna, loan)
Targets: David Pizarro, Fredy Guarin, Martin Caceres
Possible transfers: Marco Motta, Fabio Grosso, Milos Krasic, Michele Pazienza, Vincenzo Iaquinta, Luca Toni, Amauri

LAZIO |

LECCE |

MILAN |

NAPOLI |

NOVARA |

PALERMO |

PARMA |

ROMA |

SIENA |

UDINESE |
