The ex-Inter, Juventus and AC Milan coach has backed Walter Mazzarri's side to beat his former clubs to the top spot, but has warned the San Paolo outfit to stay humble
Walter Mazzarri's men surpassed expectations last term by finishing third, and have shown their quality this season by beating Inter 3-0 away from home and drawing 1-1 with Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium in the Champions League.
The Republic of Ireland manager feels that the team in sky blue have what it takes to finish on top of the pile, and overcome more established sides such as champions AC Milan and current league leaders Juventus.
"Walter Mazzarri’s team are the favourites for the Scudetto,” he told Corriere Dello Sport.
“Do you know who they remind me of? My ‘Inter dei Record’. They have the same hunger and refusal to give anything away.
“Mazzarri did well to create this mentality, plus he has those three beasts in attack. They can get close to the Maradona-Careca-Giordano trident. Of course none of them are as strong as Diego, who was like an alien, but Edinson Cavani, Marek Hamsik and Ezequiel Lavezzi complete each other.
“Napoli have only one problem, as they must not let themselves get swept away by the enthusiasm of the city. The fever pitch in Naples can be dangerous," the 72-year-old warned.
Trapattoni is not hopeful of an Inter revival, however, and fears for Claudio Ranieri's side following their poor start to the campaign.
“One gets the feeling their era is coming to an end. I remember when it happened to my Juve. It’s not an easy moment to deal with, so you need patience for one or two years. Inter have to rediscover themselves," the veteran manager concluded.
Napoli take on Parma in Serie A on Saturday, before hosting Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Tuesday.
