Fiorentina have confirmed the transfer of French goalkeeper Sebastien Frey to Genoa for an undisclosed fee.

The 31-year-old will sign a five-year deal with his new club worth around £1.6 million per annum.

Genoa were in the market for a new shot stopper due to the departure of Eduardo to Benfica earlier this summer.

And a statement on Fiorentina's official website confirming the deal reads:

"ACF Fiorentina communicates to have sold Sebastien Frey on a permanent basis to Genoa CFC. The club would like to thank Frey for his time and wish him all the best in his career."

The Marassi outfit had initially set their sights on Inter's Emiliano Viviano, but focused their attention on Frey after the Italy international sustained a serious knee injury.

Earlier this month, Fiorentina coach Sinisa Mihajlovic indicated that Frey was no longer the first-choice goalkeeper, after falling behind Artur Boruc and Neto in the pecking order at the club.

The Frenchman started his professional career with Cannes and also wore the jerseys of Inter, Verona and Parma before joining Fiorentina in 2005. He made over 200 official appearances for the club.

Frey joins new faces such as Andreas Granqvist, Alexander Merkel and Valter Birsa at Genoa.
