Tom STARKE
Hoffenheim
TOTW Apps: 1
Hoffenheim were outplayed by Dortmund on Saturday, but Tom Starke helped his side avoid a greater humiliation than the 3-1 defeat they were forced to accept. Especially in the early stages of the game, the 30-year-old did very well to keep his team in the game. Ultimately, his team-mates were not able to rise to the challenge. But individually, Starke was easily the best Hoffenheim player.

Kaiserslautern were able to manage a 2-2 draw with Augsburg on Saturday as the magnificent Florian Dick managed a brace. In Dortmund, Mats Hummels was at his best: the centre-back was unyielding, winning almost every challenge he engaged in, and man-marking to his typically suffocating level. But the best defensive performance of the week-end was that of Jerome Boateng, who nullified Wolfsburg forwards Mario Mandzukic and Ashkan Dejagah, at least when they attacked through the centre. Back in his central defensive role, the Germany international was quite at home.

Leverkusen nearly lost to Stuttgart on Saturday, but Stefan Reinartz made up for the 1-0 deficit as he netted the equaliser in what was an overall superb performance . The 23-year-old bossed the midfield, tracking his opponents all over the pitch, winning the ball back again and again.

Dortmund winger Kevin Grosskreutz makes his second consecutive Team of the Week appearance following an excellent showing against Hoffenheim, in which he scored and assisted a goal apiece. Yet the best player on the day was his team-mate, Shinji Kagawa, who found the net twice and played a big role in the third. Patrick Herrmann rounds off the attacking midfield as he returns for the third consecutive matchday. The winger assisted two goals in Gladbach's 3-0 win away to Stuttgart.

After going behind early against Koln, Schalke were saved by an improbable source: Ciprian Marica. The Romanian deputised for the injured Raul and found the net twice as the Gelsenkirchen side ended the game as 4-1 winners. On Sunday, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting had his best performance of the season by far, scoring twice in the opening minutes as Mainz cruised to a 3-1 win over Freiburg. Later, Marco Reus had yet another man-of-the-match performance in Gladbach's win over Stuttgart: he assisted Mike Hanke's opener, scored a goal of his own, and played a critical pass in the preparation of the side's third goal.
