Bundesliga preview: Round 1 - Bayern Munich face Gladbach, Borussia Dortmund host Hamburg

Bundesliga is back with a bang with plenty of exciting games as the big guns begin their quests for the title at home, while Andre Schurrle returns to Mainz with Bayer Leverkusen

Cesena Borussia Dortmund - Hamburg

  • The two teams have never played out a goalless draw in Dortmund.
  • 309 goals have been scored in the games between Dortmund and Hamburg, which is a Bundesliga record.
  • Dortmund last lost at home in the league on Matchday 1 of last season, when they succumbed to a 0-2 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen.
  • Michael Oenning is the only Hamburg coach ever to have won just once in his first eight games at the helm.


Borussia Dortmund

Jurgen Klopp will have to do without the services of first-choice striker Lucas Barrios, who is out for at least four weeks after picking up an injury while on international duty. Germany internationals Patrick Owomoyela and Marcel Schmelzer as well as midfielder Marvin Bakalorz are also set to miss out on BVB's Bundesliga opener as they are still recuperating.


Michael Oenning is not expected to make major changes to the team that narrowly lost to Valencia on Tuesday. New signing Jacopo Sala is out with an injury and is likely to miss the clash. Kevin Ingreso is also unavailable for this game.

Cesena Werder Bremen - Kaiserslautern Fiorentina

  • Werder Bremen have lost their last five season openers.
  • Goalkeeper Tim Wiese, an ex-Kaiserslautern player, has played three times against his former club in the Bundesliga. All of the matches ended in defeat for Werder Bremen.
  • The Green-Whites have lost no less than 32 times to Kaiserslautern. Only Bayern Munich have defeated them more times.
  • Only one of the last 18 encounters between the two clubs has ended in a draw.

Thomas Schaaf can not rely on the services of defenders Naldo, Leon-Aderemi Balogun, Mikael Silvestre and Sebastian Boenisch, who have been deemed unfit. Midfielder Ozkan Yildirim and strikers Denni Avdic, Onur Ayik and Claudio Pizarro are also likely to miss the game with various injuries.


The Red Devils will have to do without the services of Jan Simunek and Adam Nemec, who are out with knocks.

 Lecce Hannover - Hoffenheim Brescia

  • Hannover have won just two of their last 17 Bundesliga openers.
  • The 96ers have achieved victory just once against Hoffenheim in their last six matches between the two teams.
  • The Sinsheim outfit have won all but one of their season-opening games.
  • Hoffenheim finished 11th in Bundesliga last season for a second season running.



Hannover will be able to field almost a full-strength team on Saturday, with only midfielder Carlitos and striker Artur Sobiech out of the squad with injuries.


The Sinsheim outfit are facing an injury crisis with five players from the first team ruled out from Holger Stanislawski's Bundesliga debut as coach. Defenders Manuel Gulde and Matthias Jaissle, midfielders Gylfi Sigurdsson and Boris Vukcevic as well as striker Vedad Ibisevic have been deemed unfit to start the game on Saturday.

Juventus Stuttgart - Schalke Palermo

  • Stuttgart have beaten Schalke more times than any other team at home in the Bundesliga.
  • The Swabians' Bruno Labbadia is yet to lose as a coach to the Royal Blues.
  • Just two of the last 23 encounters between these two teams have ended in an away win.
  • Schalke sporting director Horst Heldt and coach Ralf Rangnick have occupied the same positions at Stuttgart.


Bruno Labbadia is likely to have some serious selection headaches especially regarding his team's defence as Georg Niedermeier, Ermin Bicakcic and captain Matthieu Delpierre are all injured. In addition, ex-Valenciennes man Johan Audel has been ruled out of the game as well.


Ralf Rangnick will have nearly a full-strength squad to choose from, with Tim Hoogland and Levan Kenia the only casualties for the Royal Blues.

Bari Koln - Wolfsburg Roma

  • Koln have lost all of their last three Bundesliga openers.
  • The Billy Goats have conceded 2.37 goals on average against Wolfsburg. No team has average more strikes against Koln than the Wolves.
  • Felix Magath is on a twelve-game unbeaten run against Koln, last losing to them more than a decade ago.
  • Wolfsburg achieved their biggest victory of last season against Koln, winning 4-1 at the Volkswagen Arena.

First-choice goalkeeper Michael Rensing has been ruled out with an injury, and will join veteran midfielder Petit on the sidelines. Striker Alexandru Ionita is also set to miss the game with a knock.


Long-term casualty Arne Friedrich is the only player who has deemed unfit to play on
Saturday. Felix Magath is likely to make some changes to the team that was eliminated from the DFB-Pokal by RB Leipzig last Friday.

Catania Augsburg - Freiburg Roma
  • Augsburg are the 51st team to play in the Bundesliga.
  • Last season's 2nd Liga runner-ups conceded 27 goals, a league best.
  • Freiburg have a solid record against Augsburg, winning eight times, drawing three times, and losing just once.
  • Markus Sorg's men were eliminated from the DFB-Pokal after a 2-3 loss Unterhaching last Sunday.



The Bundesliga newcomers will have to do without the services of Gibril Sankoh, who is suspended, and Torsten Oehrl, who is injured.


Jan Rosenthal is the only casualty for Markus Sorg's team, who will be looking to make amendments for their early exit from the DFB-Pokal to 3rd Liga side Unterhaching.

Catania Hertha Berlin - Nurnberg Roma
  • Hertha Berlin have won in both of their last two league openers.
  • The Old Lady have averaged more goals per game against Nurnberg than against any other team currently in the Bundesliga.
  • The Club has scored more than once just three times in their last 18 visits to Hertha Berlin.
  • The Old Lady and Nurnberg played out the first ever Bundesliga game on 24 August 1963. The match ended in a draw with Hans-Gunter Schimmoller netting for the capital outfit, and Max Morlock getting on the score-sheet for the Club.

Ex-Bayern Munich goalkeeper Thomas Kraft is unlike to make his Bundesliga debut with Hertha Berlin as he has been ruled out with an injury. Roman Hubnik, Nico Schulz and Marco Djuricin are also out with knocks while Raffael is suspended for the game on Saturday.

Catania Mainz - Bayer Leverkusen Roma
  • Mainz have won just one of their last six encounters against the Aspirins, losing on three occasions.
  • Thomas Tuchel made his coaching debut against Bayer Leverkusen two years ago, in a 2-2 draw.
  • Michael Ballack has never lost to Mainz in his career, ending on the winning side three times out of four.
  • Bayer Leverkusen's Andre Schurrle arrived at the BayArena from Mainz this summer for a sum believed to be in the region of €8 million.

Bayer Leverkusen

Long-term casualty Rene Adler is the only player deemed unfit to feature on Sunday as Robin Dutt's men aim to bounce back from their DFB-Pokal exit to Dynamo Dresden.

Catania Bayern Munich - Borussia Monchengladbach Roma

  • Bayern Munich have not lost at home to Borussia Monchengladbach in 16 years.
  • Jupp Heynckes, current coach of the Bavarians, spent more that 20 years playing for the Foals, scoring 195 goals in 283 games.
  • Five of the last eight encounters between the two teams have ended in a draw.
  • Gladbach have recorded 42 losses and have conceded 168 strikes against Bayern Munich, more than against any other team.


Bayern Munich

Star duo Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben have only recently recovered from injuries, but are unlikely to feature from the start. As a result, Toni Kroos is expected to be included in the starting line-up.

Borussia Monchengladbach

Lucien Favre will have a full-strength squad at his disposal as the Foals travel to Munich, aiming to achieve their second-ever away win to Bayern.
