Werder Bremen defender Per Mertesacker to miss Champions League clash with Tottenham with facial injury
German set for up to six weeks out...
By Stefan Coerts
Head coach Thomas Schaaf will have to make do without the services of highly rated centre-back for the next four to six weeks.
The towering defender picked up a facial injury after an elbow from Vagif Javadov in the opening minutes of Germany's Euro 2012 qualifier against Azerbaijan on Tuesday and had to leave the pitch after only 11 minutes due to the knock.
Mertesacker was taken to the hospital immediately after being substituted and a scan revealed that the defender has fractured the orbital floor below his left eye.
Earlier on Wednesday, a report on the official website of the German FA stated that Mertesacker will not need surgery. However, a report from Bild revealed that upon further testing, it was determined that the centre half would miss four to six weeks.
Germany eventually cruised to a comfortable 6-1 win against Azerbaijan after Mertesacker's substitution.
