Bundesliga Round-up: Mainz rally to defeat Wolfsburg, Werder Bremen rebound against Koeln
Mainz, Hamburg, and Freiburg all came from behind to earn victories...
By Clark Whitney
Hamburg rallied from a goal down to beat Frankfurt 3-1 and maintain their perfect record. Patrick Ochs netted a fine opener from distance late in the first half, but the visitors were able to storm back after the break.
Joris Mathijsen nodded in a Ze Roberto corner on the hour mark, and red-hot striker Ruud van Nistelrooy put Hamburg ahead with a header of his own late in the game. Jose Paolo Guerrero confirmed the visitors' victory with a fine finish after chasing down a long ball.
Marko Arnautovic had a brace and an assist as Bremen rebounded from their opening day loss to beat Koeln 4-2. Click here to read the full match report.
Diego made his debut for Wolfsburg, who got off to a brilliant start, but Mainz were able to mount a comeback for the ages. Edin Dzeko had a brace and Diego a goal of his own by the half hour mark, but Mainz regained their composure and rallied to score four unanswered goals. Morten Rasmussen pulled one back before half-time, and after the break, Elkin Soto and Andre Schuerrle netted to draw the teams level. With four minutes left, Adam Szalai expertly turned defender Simon Kjaer and struck to complete Mainz's epic comeback.
Schalke's early-season woes continued today after the faltering side failed lost to Hannover. Konstantin Rausch fired in the opener on 31 minutes, and Mohammed Abdellaoue, who had a role in the first goal, added a second for the visitors shortly after the break. Jermaine Jones pulled a goal back for Schalke with a late header, but the hosts could not equalise before the final whistle, and Hannover held on to claim three points.
Freiburg earned their first three points of the season after coming back from a goal behind to beat Nuernberg. On-loan striker Julian Schieber put the hosts ahead early, but Papiss Demba Cisse drew Freiburg level after Stefan Reisinger earned a penalty. In the second half, Memet Ekici rattled the woodwork for the Bavarians, before Cisse completed his brace with a header. Nuernberg were improved in the second half, but Freiburg were clinically efficient and held on for their victory.
In St Pauli, Hoffenheim faced far stiffer competition than in their opener against Bremen, but the village club managed to steal three points at the death. While Hoffe managed to maintain possession, their hosts were more penetrative in attack, and had an early warning shot when Fabian Boll struck the woodwork. The second half was in many ways a chess match that Hoffenheim won late thanks to Isaac Vorsah's 87th-minute tap-in.
Stuttgart manager Christian Gross could only look on in disbelief when his side went 3-0 down after 37 minutes when more haphazard defending from Niedermaier allowed the precocious Mario Goetze to head home for what could be the first Bundesliga goal of many. Vfb nabbed a consolation goal with 20 minutes remaining when Cacau headed home at the far post.
