January transfer window mid-term report: Who is coming & who is going in Ligue 1

With just nine days left to go until the transfer window slams shut, Goal.com takes a look at the possible ins and outs in Le Championnat, as well as the deals already done

Paris Saint-Germain are supposed to be leading the transfer market in France, but they have thus far been out-shone by the number of tracked players who have refused their advances, such as David Beckham and Alexandre Pato. It’s a surprise that Dijon have been the most active club in the winter window.

What are the needs of all the clubs in Ligue 1, the possible targets of your favourites club, Goal.com tells you all!

  Paris Saint-Germain

Paris Saint-Germain are now one of the most powerful clubs in Europe, and perhaps the strongest financially along with Manchester City. Following the loss of Siaka Tiene to the Africa Cup of Nations, the capital club have already snapped up Maxwell (€3.5 million) from Barcelona. PSG coach Carlo Ancelotti has not made it a mystery of his desires. “A club like PSG has to have four very good strikers,” he said. Pato (AC Milan) and Tevez (Manchester City) are the targets preferred by sporting director Leonardo, but PSG have been linked with numerous stars.

Arrivals: Maxwell (Barcelona)

Departures: Landre (Clermont, loan)

Possible Arrivals: Tevez (Manchester City), Motta (Inter), Honda (CSKA Moscow)

Possible Departures: Armand (Lille), Erding (Rennes, Galatasaray), Hoarau (Marseille)

  Montpellier

Montpellier have been the great revelation of Ligue 1 this season. Their fight against PSG for the title has not ceased to amaze. Despite the departure of some players for the Afcon – Younes Belhanda, Abdelhamid El Kaoutari, Souleymane Camara and Jamel Saihi – Montpellier president Louis Nicollin has already said that he “does not want to recruit”. Carried by Olivier Giroud, Ligue 1’s top scorer, MHSC are serene and totally disinterested in this transfer window. It will not be the same in the summer, with Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa attracting a lot of attention.

Arrivals: None

Departures: Kabze (Orduspor)

Possible arrivals
: None

Possible departures: Yanga-Mbiwa (Arsenal, Newcastle)

Lille

Lille could lose big during this transfer window. For economic reasons, Moussa Sow, last season’s top scorer in Ligue 1 with 25 goals, could well be sold to Fenerbahce for €13m. Nolan Roux has been enlisted from Brest to the tune of €8m as his replacement – an expensive fee for a talented player who has scored only four times this season. With numerous absences in defence, including Marko Basa who is out until April, Lille seek primarily a central defender to add to Chilean attacker John Jairo Ruiz, who is a bet for the future at just 18 years old. Ludovic Obraniak, who has left for Bordeaux, is unlikely to be replaced because of financial constraints.

Arrivals: Roux (Brest), Ruiz (Deportivo Saprissa)

Departures: Obraniak (Bordeaux), Wade (Boluspor Kulübü)

Possible arrivals: Ciani (Bordeaux), Ricardo Costa (Valencia), Bassong (Tottenham)

Possible departures: None

Lyon

Lyon are suffering financial problems without precedent. They are forced to sell, with Aly Cissokho liable to depart for a fee of €10m, which has been set by president Jean-Michel Aulas. In order to balance their books, OL may have to separate from another player. This could be Yoann Gourcuff (unlikely) or Ederson (who is in talks to renew his contract). Lyon have been hit by injuries to Dejan Lovren and Cris in the centre of defence, and they must find a champion in this transfer window, but this will not be possible without a sale. The rise of Samuel Umtiti does not prevent Lyon looking for a defender and a defensive midfielder.

Arrivals: None

Departures: Yattara (Arles, loan)

Possible arrivals: Bassong (Tottenham), Diakite (Nancy), Bong (Valenciennes), Gourcuff (Arsenal)

Possible departures: Ederson (Marseille, Internacional)

  Rennes

Like always at Rennes, the Breton club acts with discretion. Coach Frederic Antonetti, in agreement with the board, has turned to players with potential to sell at a later date, like young Sadio Diallo of Bastia. The Corsican coach wants a centre forward, a real striker, more than anything, as one is sorely needed in this team, with Victor Hugo Montano not filling this brief. Rennes are surveying PSG striker Mevlut Erding. PSG are willing to sell, but only on the condition they can sign first, a saga that could run and run.

Arrivals: None

Departures: None

Possible arrivals: Diallo (Bastia), Erding (PSG)

Possible departures: Dalmat (Ligue 1, Ligue 2), Kembo (Lille), Mandjeck (conflit avec l'entraîneur)

Marseille

Marseille cannot afford to buy. The proof? They brought back Brazilian striker Brandao, who is still in the midst of legal proceedings regarding a sexual assault case. Didier Deschamps has been forced to validate the choice of the club. The Afcon means Marseille are deprived of Jordan Ayew, Andre Ayew, Charles Kabore and Souleymane Diawara, but the club should remain inactive, unless they were to receive a big bid for Lucho Gonzalez and Andre-Pierre Gignac, the two largest earners. Unlike previous years, OM are no longer the buzz of January.

Arrivals: Brandao (Gremio, loan return)

Departures: None

Possible arrivals
: Hamouma (Caen)

Possible departures: Lucho Gonzalez (Porto, Internacional, Gremio), Azpilicueta (Chelsea), Gignac (Fulham), Andrade (Catania)

Saint-Etienne

Standing seventh in the league, Saint-Etienne are another surprise team and can afford to take their time. There is no rush for Christophe Galtier’s side, who have already made good progress in the transfer window. Danijel Aleksic has arrived to strengthen the attack, but it’s on the sidelines that les Verts have issues. Boubacar Sanogo and Sylvain Monsoreau are both looking to be sold, while Paulao’s loan to Betis improves Sainte’s financial state. Saint-Etienne, therefore, don’t have to move.

Arrivals: Aleksic (Genoa)

Departures: Sall (Nancy), Saadi (Reims, loan), Paulao (Betis, loan), Fernandes (Udinese, loan)

Possible arrivals: Volkov (Partizan Belgrade)

Possible departures
: Ghoulam (Man City, Genoa, Napoli), Guilavogui (Germany), Janot (Monaco)

Toulouse

Toulouse are not in the habit of moving in the winter transfer window, even when they’ve lost players to the African Cup of Nations. Toulouse are not officially interested in adding to their squad, despite the loss of Mohamed Fofana, Cheick M’Bengue and Aymen Abdennour. However, Alain Casanova is not insensitive to the profile of Serge Aurier, the full-back of Lens. And faced with the repeated injury problems of Emmanuel Riviere, they have not excluded revisiting the offensive issue before January 31. It’s far from certain, though.

Arrivals: None

Departures: None

Possible arrivals: Aurier (Lens)

Possible departures: Umut Bulut (Galatasaray), Sissoko (Marseille, CSKA Moscow, Lokomotiv Moscow, Rubin Kazan)

Bordeaux

After making a bad start to the season, the men of Francis Gillot have made a strong recovery - even if their ranking is less than flattering. As is often the case, the communication with Bordeaux is poor. Sud Ouest, generally well informed, has spoken of a budget of €10m for the winter window “to put the team back on track”, according to president Jean-Louis Triaud. Officially, the club has spent €4.5m for the two recruits. Mariano (Fluminense) and Ludovic Obraniak (Lille) should bring a touch of skill to the right flank and on set pieces. Normally, the transfer window would be closed in Bordeaux now ...

Arrivals: Mariano (Fluminense), Obraniak (Lille)

Departures: Modeste (Blackburn, loan)

Possible arrivals: Roger de Carvalho (Figueirense), Armand (PSG)

Possible departures: Ciani (Lille, Betis), Ben Khalfallah (Nice, Sochaux)

Lorient

Little or no movement is expected from Lorient, who invested nearly €5m in the summer transfer window after selling off €17m worth of talent. The Bretons are, therefore, financially flexible to make alterations. Christian Gourcuff is primarily seeking a right defender, such as Lamine Gassama from Lyon, and stays tuned in case of the departure of some players, like Innocent Emeghara. Jeremie Aliadiere - absent for several months, will be replaced - as well Gregory Bourillon, who will be unavailable for two or three months.

Arrivals: None

Departures: Penalba (Argentinos Juniors)

Possible arrivals: Gassama (Lyon), Douniama (Guingamp)

Possible departures: Ecuele Manga (Lyon, Marseille, Villarreal), Emeghara (Anzhi)

Brest

The departure of Nolan Roux to Lille for €8m is a good deal financially for Brest, but one that overshadows their sporting achievements. Coach Alex Dupont has researched an attacker to overcome the departure of the France Under-21 player, but attackers are in short supply during the winter transfer window. Issam Jemaa is at the forefront of his thoughts, but he’s had limited success with Auxerre. Brest fans understand the club’s economic obligations, but the departure of Roux is still a big risk. Brest will have to whip to recover.

Arrivals: Khaled (Epinal)

Departures: Roux (Lille)

Possible arrivals: Lezcano (FC Thun), Berger (Coimbra), Dounamia (Guingamp), Sissoko (Udinese), Utaka (Odense), Diawara (Funchal), Bahebeck (PSG), Calvo (Herediano)

Possible departures: Micola (Sparta Prague)

Evian

The promoted Savoy club are in no hurry to act during this transfer window. With new coach Pablo Correa replacing Bernard Casoni, Evian move to maintain their place in the top flight. Only the arrival of the former Auxerre midfielder Thomas Kahlenberg has come to disturb the peace of the club. After him, Evian seek primarily a striker, but they are a difficult prey during the winter window. Jerome Leroy could leave the club, but Correa has already said he “relies on everyone”.

Arrivals: Khalenberg (Wolfsburg, loan)

Departures: None

Possible arrivals: Bahebeck (PSG), Utaka (Odense), Helmes (Wolfsburg), Mora (Benfica)

Possible departures: Leroy, Sagbo (West Ham)

Dijon

The promoted club have been very active in this winter market. Determined to secure their place in Ligue 1 after an interesting first half to the season, Dijon have boasted two revelations this term: Benjamin Corgnet and Brice Jovial. They will not leave in January, but they’re likely to jump ship at the end of the season. Meanwhile, Dijon strive to ensure maintenance, for which they are on track by lying 13th. Their best effort is the arrival of Gael Kakuta, one of the great hopes of French football. At Dijon, he should be able to find playing time in line with his ambitions.

Arrivals: Kakuta (Chelsea, loan), Yeboah (ASEC Mimoas), Kumordzi (Panionios), K. Kone (Spartak Trnava), Achour (Ivry), Diabate (Dinamo Bucarest)

Departures: Mandanne (Guingamp, loan), Mara (Arles, loan), Courgnaud (Arles, loan)

Possible arrivals: Aucune

Possible departures: Corgnet (Liverpool, Lyon), Matsui (Legia Warsaw), Thil (Metz, Le Mans), Altama (Reims), Jouffreau (Ligue 1, National)

  Valenciennes

The transfer window of Valenciennes has been punctuated by the story of Gil, who may or may not return. His family have not settled in northern France, but last summer’s €3.5m addition may still finish the season with the Ligue 1 outfit. Valenciennes have retouched their midfield by adding Dusan Djuric from Zurich and defensive midfielder Pape Camara from Standard Liege. The remainder of the window will be dictated by the future of Gil. If he does not move, neither will Valenciennes.

Arrivals: Djuric (Zurich), Camara (Standard Liege)

Departures: Massampu (Bayonne, loan), Nam (Qatar)

Possible arrivals: Bahebeck (PSG), Pied (Lyon)

Possible departures: Bong (Lyon), Sanchez (Bordeaux)

Caen

Caen are in a very bad period. Marseille and Rennes have both won at the Stade Michel-d’Ornano since the turn of the year, plunging Caen into a series of five successive losses. Franck Dumas seems unresolved, but the club did sign Aurelien Montaroup from Minsk. There should not be other movements in Caen, who appear to be relegation candidates, despite a training centre of the first order.

Arrivals: Montaroup (Minsk)

Departures: Morel (Clermont)

Possible arrivals: None

Possible departures: Hamouma (Marseille, Bordeaux)

Auxerre

AJA are in a bad position in the league, and their coach, Laurent Fournier, is in a threatened position. They will have to do without the injured Adama Coulibaly until the end of the season, who has suffered a broken fifth metatarsal in his right foot. AJA had great ambitions earlier in the campaign and tried in vain to bring back Djibril Cisse. Issam Jemaa, who is tracked by Brest, could leave the ranks of the Bourguignons. Auxerre and Fournier must be reinforced defensively, with president Gerard Bourgoin, stating that the club cannot “run the risk of a disaster if Stephane Grichting or Wily Boly get injured.”

Arrivals: None

Departures: None

Potential arrivals: Ciani (Bordeaux), Boumsong (Panathinaikos), Sarr (Genk)

Potential departures : Jemaa (Brest), Traore (Newcastle)

Nancy

Very quickly, Nancy identified their needs. Jean Fernandez has added two central defenders, with Sebastien Puygrenier (Zenit St. Petersburg) and Moustapha Bayal Sall (Saint-Etienne) joining the ranks of the Lorraine club. It must be said that there is not much to reassure Nancy either offensively or defensively. Samba Diakite is almost at Lyon, but his transfer is conditioned on how quickly he will return from the Afcon. The arrival of Yohan Mollo from Grenada will allow Nancy, according to their leaders, to possess a dangerous offensive element to their play.

Arrivals: Pugrenier (Zenit), Sall (Saint-Etienne), Mollo (Grenada, loan)

Departures: Cuvilier (RC Lens, loan), Rachid (Epinal), Chahehouche (Chernomerets)

Possible arrivals: None

Possible departures: None

  Nice

With the arrival of president Riviere, Nice have been more ambitious as they await the arrival of their new stadium. Eric Roy left his post as head coach to be replaced by Rene Marsiglia, and results tend to support this decision. Despite his personal problems, the arrival of Kevin Anin is a major asset for les Aiglons. Having just missed out on Gael Kakuta, Nice are still looking for a striker, as their signing of Anin was simply opportunistic.

Arrivals: Anin (Sochaux)

Departures: Mabiala (Karabukspor)

Possible arrivals: Douniama (Guingamp), Belfodil (Lyon), Ben Khalfallah (Bordeaux)

Possible departures: Sable (Monaco)

  Sochaux

Sochaux are in a bad situation. After a succession of bad results, they are left with a group of players in turmoil. While Kevin Anin, often absent, has finally left for Nice, Modibo Maiga is still present. Previously tracked by Newcastle, the striker, despite trying to force the club’s hand with his sulks, has not departed. Coach Mecha Bazdarevic will have to refreshen his squad after five successive losses. Unaccustomed to the winter window, Sochaux have worked to strengthen their squad. The return of Charlie Davies could also provide new opportunities in an offensive sense.

Arrivals: Doubai (Udinese, loan), Banana (Esperance), Davies (DC United, loan return)

Departures: Anin (Nice), Pereira (Reims)

Possible arrivals: Ben Khalfallah (Bordeaux), Diawara (Funchal)

Possible departures
: Maiga (Stoke)

Ajaccio

Alain Orsoni, president of Ajaccio, has made it no mystery; the Corsican club, after three successive Ligue 1 victories, are thinking once again of safety. “We have five matches to negotiate well to maintain our place,” he said after the 2-1 win over Auxerre. “We seek two players; a left-back and a forward.” The Corsicans can believe, as they are only a point short of the safety zone. The arrivals of Eduardo from Lens proves the determination of the island side.

Arivals
: Eduardo (RC Lens)

Departures: Mendy (APO Leviadakos)

Possible arrivals :  Bahebeck (PSG), Deligny (Lens)

Possible departures : None
