Lens defender Gabriel Cichero suspended for five months after assaulting Bastia director
The Venezuela international broke Alain Seghi's nose, jaw and eye socket in the tunnel after being sent off in the Ligue 2 fixture, and will face a lengthy spell on the sidelines
By Gareth McKnight
The Venezuela international was sent off late in the 2-2 draw between the teams on October 15 after brawling with an opponent on the pitch.
As he marched down the tunnel following the end of the game, the South American kicked Seghi in the face, breaking his jaw, nose and eye socket.
The ex-Newell's Old Boys man will be unable to compete for the French club until March 15 2012 but, despite the severity of the attack, has maintained his innocence.
"Today I have to wait and try to understand why God allowed this punishment when he knows that I was assaulted by a player with an elbow in the stomach and I reacted like any other would react," he told the club's official website.
Cichero is set to appeal the decision and, if his plea falls on deaf ears, could face an increase in the punishment handed down by the governing body.
