The Three Lions failed to win a game in Brazil, losing to Italy and Uruguay and drawing with Costa Rica, and the former Croatia international has slammed Roy Hodgson's side

Former Croatia international Zvonimir Boban has slammed England after their World Cup group stage elimination, labelling them “losers” with "no fighting spirit."

Roy Hodgson's side lost their opening two games to Italy and Uruguay and were eliminated before their final group game against Costa Rica.

And Boban has delivered a brutal assessment of England's tournament, saying they showed a lack of enthusiasm from the start and were missing an identity under Hodgson's management.

"England were in apathy, as faceless as their coach Hodgson,” he wrote in his column for Sportske Novosti. “A hopeless crew with (Wayne) Rooney and (Steven) Gerrard playing poor as always for England.

“And they went home from Brazil with no emotions, as such failure is normal. Typical for losers.

“England gave us football, there is no San Siro, Santiago Bernabeu, or Allianz Arena that can provide emotion like an old wooden English stadium, nothing more emotional than The Kop singing 'You'll Never Walk Alone.'"

Boban claims a number of players are preoccupied with distractions away from football, leading to indifference over the importance of the national team.

“I grew up in Imotski with cartoon Nipper, about a boy dreaming to become a football player. This English team doesn't have Nipper, no fighting spirit, nor dreams.

“They just stare at smartphones, with big earphones and PlayStation in their brain,s they don't even know who they represent or what they are part of."
