Poll: Who is most to blame for England's World Cup exit?

Costa Rica's win over Italy on Friday saw Roy Hodgson's side eliminated after just two matches, with the manager and his players set to come under intense scrutiny

England have been knocked out of World Cup 2014 following Costa Rica's 1-0 victory over Italy.

The result means the Three Lions cannot qualify for the knockout stages of the tournament and face Costa Rica in their final group game with only pride left to play for.

Expectations were relatively low heading into the tournament, but having suffered defeats in their opening two matches, there are plenty of supporters pointing fingers at those who could be to blame.

Roy Hodgson selected an inexperienced squad, and though he played with an attacking style, his team lacked the defensive stability to force positive results.

Away from the manager, captain Steven Gerrard's poor header allowed Luis Suarez to score the winning goal for Uruguay on Thursday while Phil Jagielka was also caught out of position.

Wayne Rooney's performances have also come under some scrutiny while Joe Hart was beaten far too easily on a number of occasions.

On the whole Hodgson and his side have underperformed, with a number of the travelling party in South America set to have their performances analysed.
