Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott has been told he will not feature for England in next week’s friendly clash against the Netherlands at Wembley.

Lescott became a squad regular for the Three Lions under Fabio Capello thanks to a series of assured displays alongside Vincent Kompany in the heart of City’s defence during the first half of this season.

Earlier this week, however, caretaker boss Stuart Pearce signalled his intention to leave several senior players out of his squad to face the Dutch as he looks to assess younger options, and the defender has revealed he is among those who has been left out.

"I have been told I am not involved," the 29-year-old told reporters after Manchester City's 4-0 Europa League victory over Porto.

"It is a chance for other players to get involved and prove what good players they are."

Pearce is due to announce his England squad on Thursday, with uncapped duo Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Tom Cleverley widely expected to be included, while Micah Richards is also holding out fresh hope of an international recall.
