Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini tips Gareth Barry to be new England captain
The 30-year-old midfield man has often come in for criticism during his time at Eastlands, but his manager believes he is a suitable candidate for the role of Three Lions skipper

Following the FA's decision to dismiss John Terry as captain and the subsequent resignation of national team coach Fabio Capello, Roberto Mancini suggested that Barry's influence on the team often goes unnoticed but that he was still a key cog in the Citizens' machine.
Mancini also said that Barry, who has been capped 51 times in total since the turn of the millennium, possesses all the qualities required to succeed as skipper for his country.
The Hastings-born man actually captained the Three Lions in 2010, ironically just after Terry had been stripped of the armband for the first time, as England came from behind to beat Egypt 3-1 at Wembley.
“Gareth is a very intelligent man, and on the pitch he is a very important player,” said Mancini. “He understands the situations for me and with England as well because he’s a very intelligent player.
“He could be the England captain. He’s played a lot of times for the national team."
The Italian added: "He’s a good man, a clever man both outside and inside the pitch. He’s a really good player.
“In every team, there are players that don’t seem important, but in the end they prove to be one of the most important players.
“These players are quiet, but can play in every position. They help the manager and their team-mates and are always available. They fight for every ball.
"Gareth is the one player who is like this. He’s very important for us.”
