Joleon Lescott believes Steven Gerrard and Rio Ferdinand are both quality candidates for England captaincy

Lescott says players are focussed on getting a result against Montenegro
Joleon Lescott believes both Rio Ferdinand and Steven Gerrard are ideal candidates for the England captaincy.

The Three Lion’s armband is up for grabs again as Manchester United centre-back Rio Ferdinand returns to the frame.

He was originally the captain after John Terry was stripped of the honour after incidents off the pitch had brought the Chelsea’s man reputation into disrepute. But Ferdinand has had to relinquish the role of late due to picking up a niggling injury just before Capello’s men flew to South Africa in the summer.

Since then, Steven Gerrard, an experienced captain in his own right, has stepped up to the mark to pick up the role.

Now Capello has the decision before Tuesday night's qualifier with Montenegro as to who he feels is more suited to the role.

Joleon Lescott feels that the decision is too close to call and that both players are equally good candidates for the vacancy.

"It doesn't matter. Everyone in the team and the squad are established professionals, so if it is Rio or Steven it does not really matter. We are just focused on getting three points," he told Sky Sports News.

"They are both great captains and well-established and experienced players, so I don't think it will hinder any performances whoever is the captain."
