Manchester City defender Micah Richards is the latest player to pull out of the England under-21's final European Championship qualifiers.

Richards, 22, was reported sick after the Blues' 1-0 weekend defeat to Sunderland. Despite being given extra time to recuperate, he has joined Jack Rodwell, Andy Carroll, Victor Moses, Henri Lansbury and Alex Smithies in not making the trip to face Portugal on Friday night.

The junior Three Lions team need to beat the Portuguese and Lithuania - and hope Greece to fail to beat Macedonia - to secure qualification from Group 9 to the tournament next summer.

Manager Stuart Pearce has called up Middlesbrough's Jason Steele as a replacement for Smithies, but the Huddersfield Town goalkeeper could return against the Eastern Europeans on Tuesday.
