England captain Rio Ferdinand has backed Fabio Capello to prove his critics wrong after coming under attack following the World Cup.

Capello, 64, led the team through qualifying in fine style before a disappointing second round exit in South Africa soured his perception in the media. The Italian has since been repeatedly criticised for his decision making and has been lampooned regularly in the back pages of newspapers.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, Ferdinand declared Capello hadn't become "a bad manager overnight".

"You don't become a bad player overnight and I don't think our manager did either. Before the tournament he was the best thing since sliced bread and we qualified in style," he said.

"All of these media people said 'he's this' and 'he's that' and called him 'Don Fabio' now they've changed course.

"We didn't play well in the tournament and didn't get what we expected but that doesn't make him a bad manager overnight and people are going too far."

Capello declared immediately after the tournament that he was set to inject some youth into his side and Ferdinand believes the added competition will only benefit the team.

"It's up to the manager who he selects and who he thinks is right for the squad," the 31-year-old insisted.

"If he decides to make some big changes to the squad, then who are we [the players] to argue? We're just out there to do a job.

"It's all about England winning and not individuals."
