New Fulham boss Mark Hughes is hoping that striker Bobby Zamora can capitalise on his opportunity and stake a claim for a regular role in the England squad.

Following the disastrous campaign at World Cup 2010, manager Fabio Capello has decided that change is necessary for a strong performance in the qualifying stages of the Euro 2012 - with the former West Ham United forward earning a spot in the squad that will play Hungary in an international friendly at Wembley on Wednesday.

"We're delighted for Bobby," Hughes said in the Daily Mail. "It's recognition for his fine play in recent times.

"He looks a good player and he has to kick on now and be one of the main players in the Premier League.

"If he has an opportunity and he gets the shirt, it's all about grasping it. He mustn't allow the progress that he's undoubtedly made in recent times to waver. There's a wind of change in the England squad, and he may well benefit from that.

"What Bobby's got to do is build on last year and the performances that have been highlighted by Capello. If he has a similar season we benefit and obviously England will, because we'll both have a player with great ability."

Meanwhile, fellow Cottagers team-mate and Hungary international Zoltan Gera insists that Zamora genuinely deserves his place in the Three Lions squad.

"It doesn't matter how old you are, if you play well and deserve to play in the best team in your country," he said. "It matters how well you're doing on the pitch.

"What Bobby's got to do is build on last year and the performances that have been highlighted by Capello. If he has a similar season we benefit and obviously England will, because we'll both have a player with great ability."

He added: "I said to Bobby, 'See you on Wednesday, on the field, at Wembley'. He had a fantastic season last season and he's a quality player.

"England have lots of good young players, hungry players and are a very good team so it's going to be difficult for us."
