Manchester City's Jerome Boateng and West Ham United's Thomas Hitzlsperger in Germany squad to face Denmark
Joachim Loew rests star players...
By George Watts
Germany have announced their squad for the friendly with Denmark, which includes Manchester City’s new boy Jerome Boateng and Thomas Hitzlsperger of West Ham United.
Boateng featured regularly at the World Cup in South Africa, with coach Joachim Loew deploying him in an unfamiliar left back position.
Hitzlsperger is recalled to the squad after he missed out on the final 23 that went to South Africa, despite participating in all of the qualifiers, and will be desperate to re-establish himself at international level, following his move to Upton Park.
Low has rested the majority of Bayern Munich players for the friendly international with just Mario Gomez and Toni Cruz selected in the squad due to concerns from the Bundesliga champions about the fitness of their star players’.
That means there is no Miroslav Klose, Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Thomas Mueller included.
Werder Bremen pair Mesut Ozil and reported Arsenal target Per Mertesacker have also been left having only just returned to club training. And there is still no place for former Chelsea player Michael Ballack, who has still not recovered from the injury that ruled him out of the World Cup finals.
Germany take on Denmark just four weeks after they reached the semi finals of the World Cup where they were beaten by eventual champions Spain.
Germany squad to face Denmark:
Goalkeepers: Manuel Neuer, Tim Wiese.
Defenders: Andreas Beck, Jérôme Boateng, Sascha Riether, Marcel Schäfer, Christian Schulz, Serdar Tasçi
Midfield: Christian Gentner, Thomas Hitzlsperger, Aaron Hunt, Toni Kroos, Marko Marin, Marco Reus, Christian Träsch, Piotr Trochowski
Forwards: Mario Gómez, Patrick Helmes.
