Copa del Rey

Round of 32, second-leg Results

Atletico Madrid
(1) 0-1 (3)
Albacete
An Atletico Madrid side, devoid of any confidence, were knocked out of the Copa del Rey following a humiliating 1-0 defeat against Segunda outfit Albacete at Vicente Calderon.

Antonio Gomez's side had secured a surprising 2-1 victory over their La Liga opponents heading into the second leg and they found themselves in dreamland within 20 seconds when Victor Curto's shot beat Sergio Asenjo in the Atleti goal.

Los Rojiblancos rallied after falling behind but Falcao, Adrian and Diego were all guilty of wasting opportunities as Albacete defended with 11 men behind the ball.

In a late surge Atleti went close as three chances came and went in the final minutes, but Gregorio Manzano's side were unable to make their pressure count as Albacete ran out 1-0 winners on the night, 3-1 on aggregate, in what could be the Atletico coach's last match in charge.

Malaga
(3) 2-2 (2)
Getafe
Malaga were made to work hard by a valiant Getafe side at La Romareda but came out 3-2 winners on aggregate to progress to the Last 16.

Manuel Pellegrini's side had the better of the early exchanges as Joaquin and Ruud van Nistelrooy both tested Jordi Codina in the Getafe goal.

The Andalusians continued to attack and their efforts were rewarded moments after Getafe had seen a goal ruled out for offside, when Van Nistelrooy turned home Eliseu's cross on the cusp of half-time.

Getafe emerged for the second-half a reinvigorated team and forced an equaliser six minutes in when goalkeeper Willy Caballero comically put the ball into his own net.

The Madrid-based side thought they had forced extra time when Mane scored after Weligton had been sent off for Malaga. With nine minutes remaining, however, Getafe too were reduced to 10 men and Diego Buonanotte netted the decisive goal for Malaga in the 86th minute.

Villarreal
(1) 0-2 (3)
Mirandes
In a shock upset at El Madriga,l Villarreal succumbed to Mirandes by a 2-0 scoreline, which was enough to see the Segunda B team advance in the competition.

Mirandes squandered the opportunity to open the scoring when they were awarded a penalty, only for Ramon Borrell to see his penalty well saved by Cesar.

Villarreal were continuously pushed back as Cesar pulled out a great stop against Borrel before Martinez Alain fired over in a glaring miss.

The Yellow Submarine continued to be pushed back by the Segunda B team who deservedly took the lead on the hour mark. Substitute Pablo Infante scored the definitive goal, and he netted his second of the night in the 88th minute to seal Mirandes' spot in the Last 16, whilst Mateo Musacchio's late sending off ensured a miserable night for Villarreal.

Athletic Bilbao
(2) 1-0 (0)
Real Oviedo

Athletic Bilbao eased to victory against Real Oviedo at San Mames thanks to Ander Herrera's second-half strike which saw a repeat of the first-leg final score.

Marcelo Bielsa's side were comfortable throughout the entire 90 minutes, rarely accelerating out of third gear as the opposition hardly troubled Gorka Iraizoz in the Athletic goal.

The home side finally found a higher tempo midway through the second-half and with it they finished the tie off. Iker Munian sauntered through Oviedo's defence before rolling the ball into the path of Herrera who had the simplest of tasks of putting the ball into the back of the net.

Oviedo searched for a way back into the game but Athletic superiority told as they closed out the match and sealed their place in the Last 16.

Best of the Rest

In a seven-goal thriller at the Vallecas, Racing Santander advanced into the Last 16 at the expense of Rayo virtue of the away goal ruling after the sides drew 6-6 over the two legs. Similarly despite winning 2-1 on the night Betis fell to Cordoba, who'd won the first leg 1-0.

High-flying Levante completed a remarkable recovery against Deportivo la Coruna, who'd won the first leg 3-1. The Costa Blanca side reversed that scoreline forcing extra time before securing their spot in the Last 16 with a goal in extra time to end Depor's pursuit of the Copa del Rey.

Osasuna and Real Sociedad both completed their tasks to advance to the next round after successfully defending their leads from the first-leg, knocking out Almeria and Granada respectively. However, fellow La Liga representatives Zaragoza fell short against Alcorcon whose 2-0 victory on the night saw them move into the Last 16 as well.
