Betting before the season starts, or ‘Ante Post’ betting, can be profitable or it could be a simple and effective way of flushing your money down the toilet! So here is some information aimed at helping you avoid the pitfalls and secure some long-term investment opportunities.

The term Ante Post originates from horse racing where punters could bet before the horses reached the posts. In football betting the term usually applies to betting before a league or tournament starts. At this time of year, betting websites are full of people carefully considering the betting on the Premier League, Championship, La Liga, Serie A and the like.

Ante Post betting generally offers improved odds compared to placing your bet during the season as there are much larger amounts of unpredictability. Before a ball is kicked there are a lot of things that can happen to boost your chances or to ensure you have lost your money before Autumn even sets in.

Tips for Ante Post Betting

1) Back with your head not your heart

If you are depositing your hard earned cash and about to click ‘bet’ on your favourite team to win the league I would advise you to stop and think.  Are you betting because you think they ‘can’ win? Or more likely are you backing because you ‘want’ them to win?  If they do happen to be picking up the league trophy at the end of the season, will a winning bet make you any happier? Remember betting should be about striving for a profit and using your knowledge to take an advantage.

2) Are you willing to lay off?

When you are considering how much to stake, ask yourself if you have the skills and funds to lay off half way through the season? Let’s say you are backing Chelsea to win the Premier League now at 8/5. If by Christmas, they are 12 points clear and injuries to Rooney and Van Persie have made the season look like a stroll, you could look to lay off your bet and seal in a profit at something like 1/4. If you feel like this is something you can do, then you could consider a larger initial stake.

3) Multiple Betting

Backing multiple teams can secure larger odds and better returns than backing a single team (albeit with increased risk). If your reason for placing the bet is to provide interest over the course of the season and you want to do that without breaking the bank or locking your betting funds away until next May, then a multiple could tick all the boxes.

For example, selecting Real Madrid (11/10), Man Utd (5/2) and Bayern Munich (1/2) to win their respective leagues would land you a £112.40 return for a £10 investment.
