Bet of the Day: An English friendly to consider

QPR take on Plymouth, with the home side a good bet at 1.81 to win

By Patrick Reilly

Neil Warnock

A good old-fashioned English friendly is on the agenda today when Queens Park Rangers welcome Plymouth Argyle to Loftus Road as both sides prepare for the season to kick off next week.

Big spending Queens Park Rangers have changed managers with alarming regularity in recent years. Championship veteran Neil Warnock is the latest to be given a crack at bringing the London outfit back to England's top-flight, which they graced until the mid '90s. QPR have been impressive in pre-season, winning six of their last seven games scoring plenty of goals in the process.

Plymouth Argyle were relegated from the Championship last season after finished second last. The Pilgrims have since brought in former England international Peter Reid to get them out of League One. He oversaw a good 1-0 win over NAC Breda during a useful tour of Holland earlier this month, a result which followed a disappointing 3-1 loss to League Two strugglers Torquay United who lost by the same scoreline against QPR in another friendly.

Both Warnock and Reid are old school managers who will have been giving their squads a rough pre-season. They will expect a decent performance from their players so this game should be competitive.

QPR are in good form ahead of the new season and Warnock is not a man who likes to be beaten, especially at home. In the last meeting between the teams in March QPR ran out 2-0 winners at Loftus Road.

* Back QPR to win at 1.81

* QPR have scored 23 goals in the last six games. Plymouth's pre season form has been patchy so over 2.5 goals at 1.79 is worth a punt too.

Maccabi Tel Aviv gave us a scare as they took an early lead and looked comfortable against Olympiakos in front of an empty stadium in Greece. The visitors had a player sent off and the Greeks capitalised to win 2-1 to ensure over 2.5 goals paid off. Olympiakos at a -1.5 handicap certainly did not pay off, ensuring the Greeks have a difficult second leg in Israel to look forward to.
