Bet of the Day: French teenagers to have too much for Austria
We expect goals between Les Blues and the young Austrians today...
By Patrick Reilly
Good thing we steered clear of the Champions League qualifiers last night as there were too many shocks guaranteed to make punters hot under the collar. After some bizarre results we are keeping our toes out of Europe's elite competition for now and pay some attention to a quality tournament already underway.
UEFA's Under-19 Championship in France has been a pleasant antidote after an average World Cup. We saw bags of goals in the opening set of games with each of the four matches producing at least two goals.
France's youngsters clash with their Austrian equivalents this afternoon and guess what? Both of their opening games had a mighty five goals. The French were hugely impressive against the Netherlands, smashing them 4-1 in front of a watching Laurent Blanc and playing with a joie de vivre sadly missing from the senior squad in South Africa.
Austria's teenagers lost 3-2 to England in an entertaining opener where the defeated team made some bad errors at the back. Despite trailing by a two-goal deficit for much of the match, Austria forced 12 goal attempts to England's five and were much the better side in the second half. This team have goals in them as they thumped Armenia 5-1 last year and need to avoid defeat today to have any chance of reaching the semi-finals.
Expect France to put on a show in front of Blanc and over 10,000 fans in the Stade du Hazé. Austria won't roll over and need a result so goals are likely in this one.
* France to win at 1.40 and over 2.5 goals at 1.54 looks the sensible bet
Match Odds: France U/19 1.40, Draw 4.20, Austria U/19 6.26
* Preview - France U/19 - Austria U/19
Yesterday's Tip
We didn't smell many goals in the low profile Swedish second division clash between Orgryte and Jonkopings Sodra which finished 1-0 to the visitors when we flagged up under 2.5 goals at 1.92. Tack sa mycket Jonkopings!
