Southampton - Burnley Betting Preview: Why backing goals at both ends can prove profitable for punters

The Clarets have struggled away from home this season but our tipster is backing them to find the net when they visit St Mary's in the FA Cup on Saturday afternoon
Championship high-flyers Burnley will look to cause an FA Cup upset when they travel to take on Premier League opponents Southampton at St Mary’s on Saturday afternoon.

After a fine start to the season, Mauricio Pocchetino’s side have struggled in recent weeks, winning just one of their last nine matches.

Saints, though, have the ideal opportunity to put their poor form behind them this weekend and are chalked up at just 4/9 (1.44) with William Hill to emerge victorious against their Championship opponents.

Despite Burnley’s lofty league position in the second tier of English football, Sean Dyche’s side have failed to win any of their last six away matches this term and can be backed at a chunky 5/1 (6.0) with William Hill to upset the Saints on Saturday. The same firm go 14/5 (3.80) that the tie goes to a replay at Turf Moor.

Southampton have found the target in all but one of their last nine matches on home soil and will be confident of hitting the net against a Burnley side that has kept just one clean sheet in their last five matches.

England striker Rickie Lambert, who has scored six goals in 20 league appearances this season, is available at 4/1 (5.0) with William Hill to break the deadlock against the Clarets this weekend. The same firm also offer 4/1 (5.0) on Lambert’s strike partner, Jay Rodriguez – Southampton’s top scorer this term – opening the scoring.

Burnley striker Danny Ings, who has netted an impressive 14 goals in 23 league appearances for the Clarets this season, including a double in Saturday's 3-2 win over Huddersfield, is the man most likely to trouble the Saints’ defence and the 21-year-old front man can be backed at 15/2 (8.50) with William Hill to net the opening goal here.

With both sides far from solid at the back, this promises to be an open encounter and the 19/20 (1.95) quote from William Hill for both teams to score appears to represent excellent value for punters when these two sides go head-to-head on Saturday afternoon.
