James Beattie’s men have only lost two of their last nine league games in front of their own fans, but are outsiders at 2/1 (3.00) with Coral to crown their first home game of the new season with a fourth win in six.
Despite winning just six of their last 53 competitive games on the road, the visitors are 11/8 (2.38) favourites to win their first match in the fourth tier in over 30 years, while there are odds of 9/4 (3.25) on offer on both sides getting of the mark with a draw.
Tuesday’s Capital One Cup win at the Riverside Stadium will probably have come as big of a shock to the travelling support as anyone, after their 4-1 opening defeat to newly-promoted Newport ominously suggested they were in for more of the same from last campaign.
Despite the appointment of a new boss in the summer, the same defensive frailty that saw Stanley concede 68 goals in 46 games as they narrowly avoided relegation last season seems to remain, and the veteran visiting strike force of Patrick Agyemang and David Connolly will no doubt be licking their lips at the prospect.
Encouragingly for the hosts, their guests were equally careless at the back in their own 4-1 opening defeat against Oxford, and should not be relied upon to offer much resistance on Saturday, making odds of 7/10 (1.70) look very appealing on both sides hitting the back of the net.
While Portsmouth’s recent history as a Premier League club and FA Cup winner must go some way to explaining their status as favourites for this game, their modest opposition should be in much the more confident mood after their cup exploits, and will be raring to go against their prestigious guests.
With their recent home record looking rather strong, odds of 2/1 (3.00) just seem far too good to miss on the hosts collecting all three points here, and consigning Guy Whittingham’s men to a sixth consecutive defeat.
