thumbnail Hello,

After a stunning run of winners last weekend, our Spanish expert Phil Kitromilides believes backing a victory for Gregorio Manzano's side is a wise investment

The 93rd-minute winner from Giovanni dos Santos against Celta Vigo on Monday night has given Mallorca belief that they can extricate themselves from the nightmare of relegation.

Yet the side from Palma have had little time to revel in the joy of that late victory as they are back in action on Friday in a game they should be realistically aiming to claim all three points from. BetVictor offer Mallorca at 5/4 (2.25) to beat Rayo Vallecano and that looks an excellent price for a number of reasons.

At this time of the season in Spain, motivation plays a key part in the outcome of matches and Rayo have pretty comfortably achieved their objective of survival. As a result the price of 12/5 (3.40) about an away win and 5/2 (3.50) on the draw make little appeal, despite them being the best prices available.

While outside aspirations of a place in Europe remain mathematically possible for Friday's visitors, those closely associated with the club realise that a Europa League campaign could adversely affect this tiny, impoverished side on the domestic front.

The upshot of this all being that Rayo have little to play for while Mallorca are desperately battling against falling into the abyss. With that in mind the odds against quote for a home win at 5/4 (2.25) looks a good prospect.

This theory of motivation being key during this part of the season is backed up when looking at last weekend's results with mid-table sides Levante, Getafe and Rayo, losing respectively to Deportivo, Vallodolid and Real Sociedad, all of whom have plenty to play for despite being lower placed in the table.

Furthermore, Rayo's only away win in their last six on the road has come at bottom side Celta, while Mallorca have won two of their last three at Son Moix. Therefore backing a home win on Friday night looks tough to ignore, and the 5/4 (2.25) price is extremely attractive.

Of the seven matches that Mallorca have won this season, six have been by a single goal margin, so for a value bet, backing the Islanders to win by a single goal again at 14/5 (3.80) makes sense.
