JD looks at why some teams can do better in Europe than their domestic form would suggest and has two tips in mind for this weekend in the Bundesliga and Premier League
It has been another busy week of football with the Champions League and Europa League dominating the midweek action. Milan pulled off a huge shock by defeating Barcelona 2-0 in the San Siro and the hopes of many peoples' favourites for the competition are in a very perilous position. The 2-0 correct scorecast was 40/1 (41.0) with some firms and as a result Barcelona are now 11/10 (2.10) to progress with Milan a 4/6 (1.67) chance with Paddy Power.
Domestic form v European competition form
Naturally, the aforementioned result has changed the outright market for the Champions League, and Bayern Munich have now been installed as favourites with Paddy Power, the best price at 16/5 (4.20). Meanwhile, with holders Atletico Madrid on the verge of elimination in the Europa League, it does teach us some lessons in terms of assessing form.
Domestic form is not as good an indicator for European competition as some might believe. Teams who don't look impressive in their domestic league can raise their game significantly in European competition and find the ingredients to win. Chelsea were a superb example of that last season.
Teams who are so impressive in their own league can fall short in Europe, too. Borussia Dortmund won the German double last season but finished bottom of their Champions League group in 2011-12, while Bayern Munich came within minutes of winning the tournament.
Weekend Tips
Looking ahead to the weekend, Hamburg have improved significantly in the second part of the Bundesliga season and they can get something at Hannover who play on Thursday night in the Europa League. Hamburg are 11/10 (2.10) on a draw no bet basis with Paddy Power and that is a solid option.
Manchester City are also attractively priced at 19/20 (1.95) with Paddy Power to defeat Chelsea at home on Sunday. It is a must win match for Roberto Mancini's men against an inconsistent Chelsea side, who also have a midweek Europa League tie to contend with.
