thumbnail Hello,

Andre Villas-Boas' men have scored just one goal in two Europa League matches this term and Willie Duncan is expecting another tight encounter when Spurs visit Slovenia

Tottenham Hotspur’s nine-match unbeaten run came to an end when Andre Villas-Boas’ men were beaten 4-2 by Chelsea at White Hart Lane on Saturday, but the Portuguese boss will be keen to see his side return to winning ways when they take on NK Maribor in Slovenia in the Europa League on Thursday night.

Spurs have opened their Europa League campaign with two draws, having been held 0-0 at home by Lazio and 1-1 away to Panathinaikos, but the Lilywhites are chalked up as 8/11 (1.73) with William Hill to pick up all three points on Thursday.

Maribor are the runaway leaders in Slovenia, nine points clear at the top of the league after just 14 league matches, and boast an impressive home record.

Darko Milanic’s side have dropped just two points from seven home fixtures this season, conceding just one goal, and they are chalked up at a chunky 4/1 (5.0) with William Hill to shock Spurs on Thursday night. The same firm go 5/2 (3.50) that the match ends in a draw.

It should also be noted that Maribor thumped Panathinaikos 3-0 in their opening group game before slipping to a narrow 1-0 defeat at Lazio in the last round of fixtures, and this looks likely to be a tricky test for Spurs.

Maribor’s last four matches have featured just one goal and, with goals at a premium in Spurs’ European adventure so far, another tight match looks likely here.

William Hill’s 8/11 (1.73) quote for fewer than three goals to be scored looks worthy of support while the half time draw is available at even money (2.0) with the same firm.

If there are goals, Spurs striker Jermain Defoe looks to represent excellent value at 4/1 (5.0) with William Hill to bag the opener.

The England striker has established himself as a first-team regular under the stewardship of Villas-Boas and has repaid his manager's faith by scoring five goals in eight appearances this term. He looks worth backing to break the deadlock on Thursday night.
