Tom Pope has been in fine goalscoring form for the Valiants and Adam Bate expects that to continue against Oxford at Vale Park on Monday eveningPort Vale may remain in administration but they have enjoyed a strong start to the League Two season.
The Potteries outfit have won seven of their 11 league games – and many of them in fine style. They are currently the top scorers in the league, despite having played a game fewer than most sides.
That game in hand comes on Monday night at Vale Park when they host Oxford. The home side can move four points clear of third-place Cheltenham with a win.
Port Vale are 10/11 (1.91) with William Hill to beat a team that lost six on the bounce in the league earlier this season.
But there is some encouragement for Oxford here. While Port Vale have won their last five away games, Micky Adams’ men haven’t won either of the last two in front of their own fans.
Consider too that there are signs Oxford may have turned a corner – they have now gone three without defeat in all competitions. Oxford are 16/5 (4.20) to win with William Hill and the draw is available at 9/4 (3.25).
In the goalscorer markets, it is impossible to ignore the recent form of Vale striker Tom Pope. The former Crewe forward has 11 in 11 in League Two this season – that’s more than he has ever scored in a full season before.
He is 27 now and it is easy to think that scoring run could end soon but form is the key factor here and with wingers providing the service there is every chance this will be Pope’s annus mirabilis. He’s 8/11 (1.73) anytime goalscorer and 3/1 (4.00) first scorer with William Hill.
But how about the odds of 16/1 (17.00) for a Pope hat-trick? With the goals that the hosts have been scoring this season that cannot be ruled out against struggling opposition and could be a long-shot option.
And given the likelihood of goals, it would be no surprise to see Port Vale take a lead into the break. For the pick of the bets, back them at HT/FT at 2/1 (3.00) with William Hill.
