After a difficult summer, Ally McCoist's men are competing in Scotland's Third Division - Willie Duncan examines Paddy Power's special markets on the GersAfter a hugely dramatic summer, Rangers are slowly adjusting to life in the bottom tier of the Scottish Football League.
Despite the Ibrox club taking their place in the Scottish Third Division, Ally McCoist’s side have generated plenty of media interest in the early weeks of the season and it comes as no surprise that bookmaker Paddy Power has lined up a number of special bets on how the Gers are likely to fare as they plot their way to the Scottish Premier League.
Rangers, of course, are expected to cruise towards the Third Division title and are chalked up as 1/2 (1.50) with Paddy Power to beat arch rivals Celtic, hot favourites to retain their Scottish Premier League crown, in a match bet to determine which club secures a title triumph first.
Neil Lennon’s side are rated as a 6/4 (2.50) chance with the Irish bookmaker to celebrate SPL success before Rangers can secure the Third Division title, but the Gers are the value pick here as the Hoops have made a sluggish start to the season and may find themselves distracted further by European football on the horizon.
Rangers, though, have not found the Third Division to be plain sailing by any stretch of the imagination and have narrowly avoided humiliating defeats on the road against Peterhead and Berwick Rangers.
With that in mind, the 11/8 (2.38) with Paddy Power for Rangers to go through the Third Division campaign unbeaten appears to be too short here, while the 14/1 (15.0) quote for the Gers to win all 34 of their remaining league games is no value considering that McCoist’s men have collected just eight points from their first four league games.
Paddy Power go just 13/2 (7.50) that Rangers win four successive league titles, culminating with the Premier League title, but that price does not represent value with such uncertainty hanging over the club’s long term future.
Rangers have not had it all their own way so far this season, but with a squad packed with Premier League experience, they should overcome their early season jitters to wrap up the Third Division title quickly and must be backed at 1/2 (1.50) to have secured the title before the Premier League title is won by bitter rivals Celtic.
