Watford - Birmingham Betting Preview: Goals to come late at Vicarage Road

Adam Bate fancies the Hornets at home but is tipping the goals to come after the interval against Lee Clark's charges on Saturday afternoon
Watford have already experienced the highs and lows of the Championship in the first week of the season.

Two late goals turned around their opening day trip to Crystal Palace and secured three points with a 3-2 win.

Then there was the disappointment of a last-gasp Michael Chopra goal for Ipswich in midweek that saw the Hornets beaten in front of their own fans in the dying moments.

But, at least the two goals at Selhurst Park came from Almen Abdi and Matej Vydra – two of Watford’s loan signings from Udinese. Vydra is 8/1 (9.0) to score first in this one.

There has been excitement and scepticism in equal measure since the Pozzo family took over but the instant impact of several players will encourage fans that the upheaval at Vicarage Road might go well under new boss Gianfranco Zola.

After all, things weren’t too shabby before he arrived. Factoring in the impressive end-of-season run under Sean Dyche last season, it’s still just two defeats in 15 Championship games for the Hornets.

Watford are 29/20 (2.45) with William Hill to pick up three points at home to Birmingham on Saturday.

At Birmingham it isn’t so much the uncertainty of a new takeover but the financial concerns that continue to haunt them relating to the previous one.

It was a last-minute goal by Nikola Zigic - 13/2 (7.5) to net first here - that spared Blues’ blushes on the opening day but now the tall striker looks likely to become the latest big name to leave St Andrew’s.

And the bright young hope at the club, England’s Jack Butland, appeared more of a hindrance than a help when culpable for two of the goals in Tuesday’s defeat at Sheffield Wednesday.

However, even following the exit of Chris Hughton, they have still got some strong players under new boss Lee Clark and this is the bulk of the team that lost just three of 26 league games last season after Christmas.

Birmingham are slight underdogs at 6/4 (2.50) with William Hill. The draw is available at 11/5 (3.20).

But it’s the Watford win at 29/20 (2.45) that provides the best value here – a good price for the home side that continue to add quality from Udinese and Granada into their ranks.

It’s not the pick of the bets though, because while it’s a little early to be betting on form it seems clear that both these sides have been willing to open games up late on.

There have been an astonishing eight goals in the four games they’ve played between them this season inside the last quarter of an hour. There have only been five goals in the first-half of those matches.

As a result, the pick of the bets is to back the second half to be the highest scoring one at 21/20 (2.05) with William Hill.
