Luis Fernando Tena's side will enter London 2012 full of confidence after winning the Toulon Tournament earlier this year. Willie Duncan expects them to make a good start here
After their success in the Toulon Tournament earlier this year, much is expected of Luis Fernando Tena’s side in this tournament, and they can be backed at 5/4 (2.25) with Bet365 to get their Summer Games off to a dream start with victory over the South Koreans.
Hong Myung-Bo’s side will be desperate to pick up a victory in what looks to be a very tight qualifying group, and the Red Devils are chalked up at 9/4 (3.25) with Bet365 to bag an opening-day victory. The same firm offer 11/5 (3.20) that both sides are forced to settle for a share of the spoils.
Reports have suggested that Tottenham’s Mexican star Giovani dos Santos may need to settle for a spot on the bench after failing to impress in the pre-tournament friendlies, so he may not represent great value in the first goalscorer market.
Instead, Mexico are likely to turn to Marco Fabian to fire them to glory in London. Fabian has netted an impressive 13 goals in just 12 matches for his country and can be backed at a chunky 13/2 (7.50) with Bet365 to hit the opening goal against South Korea.
Given Fabian’s incredible scoring form at this level, the 21/10 (3.10) for the 23-year-old Mexican star to net at any time should be snapped up by punters here.
Despite Dos Santos’ absence, one player who will be familiar to home fans will be Arsenal’s South Korean striker, Park Chu-Young. The striker has scored nine times for his country in 27 outings and is likely to be a key man should the South Koreans spring a surprise.
Chu-Young is 6/1 (7.0) with Bet365 to net first in this contest while the same firm will offer 2/1 (3.0) for the Gunners’ frontman to score at any time.
Chu-Young’s side, though, could find it difficult to make an impact at the Games against Tena’s slick Mexican outfit, and a Mexico win at 5/4 (2.25) looks good value.
