Brendan Rodgers makes his bow as Reds boss on Saturday night against Paul Mariner's side and Willie Duncan is backing one of the new manager's new recruits to hit the net here
Reds fans will be desperately hoping that Rodgers, who joined the club from Swansea City in the summer, will be able to revive the team’s fortunes and the Northern Irish manager will be keen to get off to a winning start against the Major League Soccer strugglers this weekend.
The English Premier League side can be backed at 2/5 (1.40) with William Hill to ensure that Rodgers’ Anfield career gets off to a winning start while the same firm go 6/1 (7.0) that Paul Mariner’s side upset the odds with victory. Draw backers may be tempted by William Hill’s 11/4 (3.75) quote that the match ends all square.
Much has been said and written this summer about the immediate future of Liverpool striker Andy Carroll with speculation rife that the big man does not feature in Rodgers’ plans and, this weekend, Carroll could be forced to play second fiddle to Liverpool’s newest acquisition, Fabio Borini.
The 21-year-old Italian striker joined from Roma earlier this month and he can be backed at William Hill’s 7/2 (4.50) quote to mark his Liverpool debut by opening the scoring against Toronto.
The same firm offer a tempting 10/11 (1.91) quote on Borini scoring at any time and that could represent superb value given that the striker will be desperate to impress on his debut.
Another player who could represent good value in William Hill’s first goalscorer market is Joe Cole, who is chalked up at 7/1 (8.0) to net first.
The midfielder fell out of favour under Kenny Dalglish and was shipped out to Lille on loan but will be looking for a clean slate under Rodgers’ stewardship and will come into this match fresh having been left out of Roy Hodgson’s England squad for Euro 2012. And should he recreate the form that persuaded Liverpool to bring the former Chelsea and West Ham United midfielder to Anfield, he could play a prominent role in Rodgers’ rebuilding process.
Fabio Borini to score at any time at 10/11 (1.91) with William Hill
