Frank de Boer's men welcome Neil Lennon's Hoops to Amsterdam ArenA. Willie Duncan is backing one of the home side's young stars to shine against the Scots in this gameScottish champions Celtic face a stiff test when they travel to Amsterdam to face Frank de Boer’s Ajax side on Saturday.
Neil Lennon’s men were 2-1 winners in their first pre-season match against lower league German side Aalen on Tuesday night but the trip to face Ajax represents a significant step up in class for the Hoops and it comes as no surprise that they are rated as William Hill’s 100/30 (4.33) outsiders to win this weekend.
Frank de Boer’s men have been warming up for this weekend’s clash by facing local opposition and Ajax have been in impressive form, netting an astonishing 18 goals in just three matches, most notably running out as 8-0 winners against Noordwijk last Saturday.
Ajax will expect a stiffer test here but are regarded as warm favourites for the clash against the Hoops, with William Hill chalking up a home victory at 4/6 (1.67) while the same firm go 12/5 (3.40) that the match ends in a draw.
Saturday’s hosts have struggled to recruit this summer and, indeed, lost Jan Vertonghen to Tottenham Hotspur so Ajax will likely look to last season’s top scorer, Siem de Jong for inspiration on Saturday.
The Switzerland-born Netherlands international notched an impressive 17 goals in 36 appearances last term and can be backed at a juicy 9/2 (5.50) with William Hill to open the scoring against their Scottish visitors on Saturday while the same firm offer a tempting 6/5 (2.20) that De Jong strikes at any time in the match.
Gary Hooper was the Scottish Premier League’s top goalscorer last season with 24 league goals in 37 appearances for the Hoops and Hooper, who scored five against Heart of Midlothian on the final day of last season’s league campaign and also found the net against Aalen.
He is chalked up at 15/2 (8.50) with William Hill to score first on Saturday with the same firm offering 9/4 (2.75) that Hooper scores at any time.
Ajax, though, are likely to make their superiority count here and the 6/5 (2.20) that talisman De Jong hits the target on Saturday is worthy of support.
Siem de Jong to score at any time at 6/5 (2.20) with William Hill
