Paddy Power refunded over a million euros after the Champions League final. Jim Knight looks at the bookies' offering for the top goalscorer prize at this summer's major tournament
Paddy Power refunded losing bets to the value of over €1 million [£800,000] after Chelsea lifted the Champions League trophy against Bayern Munich. Th next event on the football horizon is who will score the most goals at Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine this summer.
A new manager, a new captain and now England need a new goalscorer if they are to get out of Group D as Wayne Rooney’s two-match ban rules him out until the final game against the Ukraine.
Rooney is a 33/1 (34.00) shot with Paddy Power to be crowned leading scorer at the tournament, which begins in less than two weeks.
And that may be tempting given his international goal-scoring record of 28 in 73 appearances, including four on his tournament debut at Euro 2004.
If England fail to win against France or Sweden without him, they will need his goals just to keep them in the competition.
It will be worrying for England supporters that Andy Carroll is next best in the betting at 40/1 (41.00), who has scored just once in a friendly against Ghana in 2011.
Robbie Keane will lead an Ireland team out at their first major finals in 10 years when Euro 2012 gets under way on Friday, June 8.
Ireland haven’t been at the European Championships since their debut appearance in 1988 and the LA Galaxy front-man Keane will be looking to increase his tally of 53 international goals. The Dubliner is 66/1 (67.00) with Paddy Power to be the tournament’s leading scorer.
Bayern Munich’s Mario Gomez will be keen to put the defeat to Chelsea behind him and snaffle some international silverware with Germany.
Gomez heads the top scorers’ list with Paddy Power at 8/1 (9.00) and the striker is an obvious threat given Germany’s unrivalled ability to grind out results in tournament finals.
If you fancy the Germans to win Euro 2012 outright, it's 12/1 (13.00) that they do so with Gomez as the competition’s top scorer in the winner and top goalscorer doubles’ market.
An outside bet top goalscorer could be on a winger for the European Championships. Netherlands' Arjen Robben 33/1 (34.00), France's Franck Ribery 50/1 (51.00) and England's Ashley Young 66/1 (67.00).
The latter two scored in this weekend's friendlies to help prevent embarrassing defeats to Iceland and Norway respectively, while Robben is crucial to a strong Dutch attack.
There were 77 goals scored at Euro 2008, the same number as Euro 2004. Paddy Power are offering odds of 5/6 (1.83) for there to be over 75.5 goals in Euro 2012.
